Bruno Mars Mother Dies at 55

It has been announced that the mother of the Grammy-winning pop star Bruno Mars has died in Hawaii at the age of 55.

Bruno’s mother lived in Hawaii and it was revealed today that Bernadette Hernandez died Saturday of a brain aneurysm. A publicist for Bruno Mars’ record label, Atlantic Records spoke to the Associated Press with the condition that their identity remain unknown as the source was not legally allowed to speak for the company or Bruno.

Hernandez immigrated to Hawaii from the Philippines as a child, and was of Filipino and Spanish descent. She met his father while the two of them were performing in a show. Bruno’s mother was a hula dancer and his father was a musician who played percussion.

At the age of two the youngster was nicknamed “Bruno” by his father, because of his resemblance to legendary professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino. Bernadette Hernandez was not just a dancer but a singer as well.

Mars was one of six children and came from a musical family who exposed him to a diverse mix of reggae, rock, hip hop, and Rhythm and Blues. His parents were quite a musical couple and his father used his musical ability to perform Little Richard rock n roll music.

Apart from what Bruno’s mother died of, no other information has really been available. Most likely because the family are in route to Hawaii. Bruno was extremely close to his mother. Mars is actually on tour and will no doubt be inconsolable to hear that his 55 year-old mother has died.

The 27 year-old singer even dedicated a song to her, I Love You Mom. Bruno has always been very open about how supportive she was when he sang in the family music group and especially after he had become famous.

Mars is actually on a nationwide tour right now but has been on break since mid-May. The shows pick back up on June 22nd when he is scheduled to be in Washington, D.C.

Before Ms Hernandez was reported to have died in hospital of a brain aneurysm it had initially been reported that the mother-of-six had suffered a suspected heart attack on Friday and was being treated at the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.

A family friend, Anita Sojot told the Sun’s Star magazine of Friday, “Bernadette is in hospital and the grandkids are all here, I’m looking after them. The family is on its way here right now and we are going to discuss what to do next.”

Apart from praising his mother for supporting him and his career he said that he acknowledged his Hawaiian roots and his musical family as an influence. He said, “Growing up in Hawaii made me the man I am. I used to do a lot of shows in Hawaii with my father’s band. Everybody in my family sings, everyone plays instruments…I’ve just been surrounded by it.”

Mars is one of pop’s top acts with several No. 1 hits including his most recent, “When I Was Your Man.” His mother, a hula dancer and a singer who immigrated from the Philippines, nurtured her son’s interest in music at an early age.

No one from the family could be contacted for any further information. It has not been revealed if Bruno Mars has made any personal statement after hearing that his mother died at 55 in the Hawaiian hospital.
