Google Announces Building a Database of Child Porn

Everynow and then, I think the American public would like to hear some good news from the services and corporate giants like Google and Facebook and Apple. While the recent Google announcement on building a database of child pornography, on the surface sounds pro-active, it’s glamour is superficial distraction from the recent NSA scandal in which it is tied.

The NSA /CIA surveillance program called Prism is the biggest scandal since CoIntelPro, and has confirmed for those already in the know the scope of power and reach these modern day Goliath’s have, and the immense capability for which they were designed. Which then raises another question….

Why is child exploitation, child pornography still a global problem and the fastest growing criminal activity in America and worldwide?

After hundreds of millions of dollars invested , to build what may truthfully be the worlds largest overt surveillance program with access to 300 million Americans, and every bit and header of data that flows through the U.S, via foreign sources, (which is immense) the American government is allowing software companies to spearhead the hunt for pedophiles, and traffikers of children and child porn, by building a database of encrypted child pornography. Excuse me while I shake my head for a minute -did  I read this right?

“Internet giant Google announced plans Saturday to build a database of encrypted child pornography images to “enable companies, law enforcement and charities to better collaborate on detecting and removing these images, and to take action against the criminals” producing and sharing them.

Admittedly, one of the first reactions I had to the announcement of the #PrismScandal was to hope it was being wisely used by government agencies to track just these sorts of things; specifically human traffiking, child pornography and child endangerment. To date the only word that has been used to justify it’s presence, is the term “terrorism”. Prism is about the war on terror, we are reminded. I say to thee respectfully, that child abductions and child pornography within america are domestic threats, that these things are acts of terrorism, for they terrorize American communities, and affect them from coast to coast.

Fast Facts on Child Porn in America

  • child pornography accounts for approximately 20% of all internet porn
  • 20,000 images are posted and uploaded weekly (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, 2003)
  • of those arrested for the possession of child pornography 40 percent had also sexually victimized children
  • Of those arrested between 2000 and 2001, 83 percent had images involving children between the ages 6 and 12; 39 % had images of children between ages 3 and 5; and 19% had images of infants and toddlers under age 3 (National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, Child Pornography Possessors Arrested in Internet-Related Crimes: Findings fro the National Juvenile Online Victimization Study.
  • As of December 2005, child pornography was a $3 billion annual industry
  • Never before in the history of telecommunications media in the United States has so much indecent (and obscene) material been so easily accessible by so many minors in so many American homes with so few restrictions.”
(U.S. Department of Justice, Post Hearing Memorandum of Points and Authorities, at l, ACLU v. Reno, 929 F. Supp. 824 (1996).
  • Child / Human trafficking is the largest market second only to drug trafficking
  • Over 1 million people are bought and sold across international borders annually, 50% of which are children
  • Most of these abducted children are destined for the sex industry

It is clearly a priority of the American government and every nation for that matter, to declare war on sex slavery, human trafficking, child sex abuse and child pornography, all which are facets of the same ugly rock.
Why then must Google build an entirely new database of image when we know it has the ability already to track and monitor criminal activity, and has a GPS mapping system at it’s disposal? Why aren’t we seeing arrests being made daily and children rescued regularly in the media?

And how are we to commend the company for it’s $5 million dollar tax write off to child protection agencies National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and the Internet Watch Foundation, when

1. Google’s success and existence has helped to propel and feed the industry of child exploitation, (and $50 billion dollar revenue in 2012) is part of the reason why the industry has grown.

2. $5 million dollars in a war against child exploitation, from a company who grossed $50 billion dollars in 2012 hardly seems like a meaningful contribution but rather an act of tokenism.

3. Google is undoubtedly a key player in CIA and NSA operations, which means it’s got the force of justice behind it and can literally move mountains.

In 2011, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s (NCMEC’s) Cybertipline Child Victim Identification Program reviewed 17.3 million images and videos of suspected child sexual abuse. This is four times more than what their Exploited Children’s Division (ECD) saw in 2007. And the number is still growing.

Perhaps the biggest reason why the American government has lost the war on child trafficking and child exploitation is because it’s in bed with the devil. In 2005 Rep. Cynthia McKinney interrogated Secretary Rumsfeld and General Myers on the Dyncorp human traffiking scandal. The C-Span footage is below

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s statistic of over 17 million images and videos confirms the need for a consolidated database. While the Google announcement of building a database of child porn is certainly a small step in the right direction, is it enough to summon real justice? A government mandate to use social media as surveillance tools like Google and Facebook and Yahoo as aggressively towards this area, would bring even brighter news to the American people. As I said before, I think every now and then the people would like to hear some good news coming from their giants of industry, and their elected representatives about issues that affect them for the better.

The only real acceptable mandate is to make this issue a priority, and yet it is not defined as terrorism, so it takes a backseat to military war agendas, like the newest war being led in Syria. Larger steps, more visible results, is the only acceptable mandate from a governing body responsible to it’s people.
