How did National Doughnut Day come about?
The holiday was established by the Salvation Army in 1938. The purpose was to raise funds during the Great Depression and honor the female volunteers, or “lassies,” as they were called, who supported soldiers who fought on the front lines during WWI. The “lassies” fed the soldiers delicious, wholesome meals, and doughnuts, as a yummy treat.
Around 250 “lassies” provided this sort of assistance to American soldiers in France in 1917.
To celebrate this historic and importnat service to our armed forces during WWI, many national chains and smaller shops are offering free doughnuts this Sunday.
Krispy Kreme, for example, will be giving away a free doughnut of any variety to every customer at participating locations, while supplies last. No purchase is necessary, though some of the other doughnut eaterys do require customers to buy something else.
Dunkin’ Donuts is one such place where you have to purchase somehthing else to get your free donut. There, customers will receive a free doughnut with any beverage purchase. While you’re there, you should try out one of their new Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwiches. They make their debut on the permanent menu at Dunkin’ Donut Restaurants today.
The sandwich is just 360-calories, and features bacon and a pepper fried egg on a glazed yeast ring donut. Yum!
