Moderate candidate Hasan Rowhani is the victor in the presidential election of Iran.
The Interior minister announced the winner on Saturday morning, after meticulous counting under the supervision of six candidates’ representatives. Two of the candidates close to the clergy had their hopes dashed by not reaching the top three.
A former chief nuclear negotiator, the 64 year old Hasan Rowhani has vowed to continue seeking diplomatic solutions over the Iranian nuclear program. He is engaging in direct talks with the US. All six candidates regarded the nuclear policy of the President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the source of the political and economic crises of the country.
Mr. Rowhani has promised the voters that he will ensure freedom of expression and will seek to bring liberty to Iran by ending the ‘eight year dark era” of Mr. Ahmadinejad.
