Jay-Z made news this past Sunday when he ran a three minute commercial announcing his upcoming album MAGNA CARTA THE HOLY GRAIL and now the hip hop icon has sold one million copies before it’s release. How can this be, and will it count towards soundscan once it is officially released? Jay-Z sold his album to Samsung for $5 a piece and gave the tech giant exclusive rights to his album for three days. The deal between Jay-Z and Samsung is that Samsung will develop an app called #MagnaCarta and it will launch June 24 in the Google play store for Galaxy android users. Fans who download the app will receive Jay-Z’s upcoming album MAGNA CARTA THE HOLY GRAIL on July 4th ahead of the general public who will be able to download three days after (July 7.)
Now, many fans have come out saying Jay-Z is a sellout for this move while some say it was a smart business move on Jay-Z’s part. Which ever side fans stand on, Jay-Z more than likely doesn’t care as he looks to get $20 million from the deal.
Jay-Z recently took to his personal twitter account, something he rarely does and voiced his opinion on the deal, tweeting:
“If 1 Million records gets SOLD and billboard doesn’t report it, did it happen? Ha. #newrules #magnacartaholygrail Platinum!!! VII IV XIII”
“Kanye West “lead single” projected on buildings worldwide #newrules #magnacartaholygrail”
“J Cole app for listening session. Don’t talk just listen..#newrules”
“Wale up next week #newrules”
“Ok that was my yearly allotment see ya’ll 2014..#newrules #magnacartaholygrail”
Also, Jay-Z celebrated the tenth anniversary of his 40/40 club last night (June 17) along with wife Beyonce, NFL star Geno Smith, New York Yankees star Robinson Cano, business magnate Robert Kraft and rapper T.I. Jay-Z opened his 40/40 club back in June of 2003 and two years ago Jay-Z had the club undergo a $10 million refurbishment. Jay-Z also has clubs in Las Vegas and Atlantic City.
