Lindsey Vonn was surprised by a mandatory drug test while attending the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards (CFDA) by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Vonn, who is training for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, accompanied designer Cynthia Rowley to the extravagant ceremony at the Lincoln Center on Monday night.
According to sources, Vonn and Rowley were sitting in Alice Tully Hall when the skier received a cell phone call from the IOC summoning her; Vonn had to provide a sample to be tested on the spot. After passing the impromptu test, the IOC staffer told Vonn to “have fun”; she then returned to the star-studded event to hang out with the likes of Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang, Ralph Lauren, Anna Wintour, and Michael Kors.
Vonn, 28, is a World Cup alpine ski racer who has competed with the United States Ski Team; as one of only two female skiers to do so, she has won four overall World Cup championships. Additionally, she has won the gold medal in downhill skiing in the 2010 Winter Olympics, six consecutive World Sup season titles in downhill discipline, four consecutive titles in Super G, and three titles in combined as well as numerous other awards.
Vonn and Tiger Woods
Recently Vonn began dating Tiger Woods; although she has been used to the spotlight as a sports celebrity, she was not used to the intensity of dating somebody of Woods’ caliber. She stated, “It’s weird. I’m used to it in the ski world, but not my personal life. So, it’s been difficult and interesting.” (gossipcenter.com)
Vonn said she is taking it all in stride, though; having her picture taken at all times even though she may not realize it is being taken at the moment or may feel intrusive. Although, after being surprised by a drug test at a gala event like the CFDA Awards, a picture may not be so intrusive.
Woods says of their recent romantic involvement, “Lindsey and I have been friends for some time. But over the last few months we have become very close and are now dating.” (gossipcenter.com)
Athletes and Drug Testing
At a time when other sports organizations are under heavy scrutiny for athletes’ drug use, it is no wonder the IOC would pop up at a gala event like the CFDA Awards to test Vonn. Simply because she is wearing a spectacular gown and surrounded by beauty does not mean she is immune to the lures of performance enhancing drugs.
Major League Baseball is taking a hit this week as union management interviews players linked to a Miami anti-aging clinic to have allegedly sold performance-enhancing drugs to them. The investigation focuses on several major players: Alex Rodriguez, Ryan Braun, Nelson Cruz, and Melky Cabrera have been named.
The clinic, Biogenesis of America, has now been closed.
Michael Weiner, head of the Major League Baseball commissioner’s office says of the investigation, “It would be unfortunate if anyone prejudged those investigations,” and, “no decisions regarding discipline have been made or will be made until those interviews are completed.” (abcnews.go)
Vonn’s surprise test at the CFDA Awards was negative, but it will like not be her last, given the controversy surrounding athletes today.
