South Africa – Nelson Mandela remains in hospital for the fourth day now, with a recurring lung infection. It is reported that his situation remains critical although stable.
The frail, 94 year old Nelson Mandela was admitted to the Pretoria hospital on Saturday when his health deteriorated. Mandela has been in hospital several times this year for the same recurring lung condition and this time it might be more serious than the other times.
The South African President Jacob Zuma, who was to visit Mandela yesterday, issued a press statement stating that he had contact with Mandela’s medical team. Zuma said he has full confidence in the medical team treating Mandela. The government spokesperson said Zuma will not visit the former president as he is in Cape Town and will attend parliament for a budget hearing.
The security at both entrances to the hospital has been tightened and police officers are now searching any vehicles entering the premises as a precautionary measure. Police spokesperson Phuti Setati said the police were part of the presidential protection services team, whose task included protecting former presidents. The reason for the hike in security is biased; perhaps it is to ensure that the real situation of Mandela does not reach the media.
Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, the former wife of Nelson visited the hospital today with her daughter Zindzi, and other members of the family arrived in separate vehicles during the day to visit the ailing Mandela. Photos were published of their vehicles entering the hospital grounds.
The gathering of reporters at the hospital since Mandela’s admission is attracting more journalists who wait in anticipation to deliver the truth to the world. The worldwide concern and interest in Nelson Mandela have led to several reports in the media rousing speculation on the situation. Admittedly, there is an element of mystery surrounding the truth about Mandela’s health. The intense media attention and speculation have given rise for people to vent their anger at the ANC government for withholding the truth.
As we browse through all the media reports, we gather little snippets of truth and can assume that the intensive care treatment Nelson Mandela is receiving is serious. We can believe the deterioration of his health is critical and we can only assume that he is on life support. At the age of 94, and his continued health scares, there is a real possibility that he might not make a recovery at all.
Comments continue to flood the social media sites from people showing respect and admiration for Mandela. Several of the comments posted to the social media sites turn into debate and the nastiness is not hidden. Several mixed views are aired displaying a division of people and their perception of Nelson Mandela and all he stands for. Prayers are held around the country for the recovery of Nelson Mandela.
Again, it can be said that the majority of people do not have confidence in the Zuma government who knows the people of this country love Nelson Mandela and want the truth about the seriousness of the situation. Will Mandela becoming home after four days in the hospital, or will he be remaining there for an extended period of time?
