New York authorities have discovered as many as 40 pipe bombs and other explosives inside the apartment of a man in Springwater.

An explosion occurred when Joseph Martino was apparently attempting to dry some explosive material in his oven, and caused a huge explosion.  Undersheriff James Szczesniak said that some of the other area residents were evacuated during the removal of the 34-year-old man’s cache of devices.

At present, Maritino is being held without bail on weapons possession and reckless endangerment charges.

The suspect lived alone, and authorities have not determined when or if he planned to use the weapons.  He was unemployed, and the apartment manager said he was being evicted.

The explosive material was acetone peroxide, which can be purchased at any drug store.  The material is a favorite of terrorists, but police do not believe he was part of such a group.

The New York neighborhood could have received much greater damage from 40 such explosive devices.
