Adding more fuel to the All Alumni judging panel for season 13 of American Idol, it has been confirmed today that both Nicki Minaj and her rival on the show, Mariah Carey are leaving this year. Fan’s will no doubt miss the two’s rivalry that went on in front of the cameras and off.
Nicki let her Twitter followers know via her account by tweeting, “Thank you American Idol for a life changing experience! Wouldn’t trade it for the world! Time to focus on the Music!!! Mmmuuuaahhh!!!”
In keeping with the rivalry between Minaj and Carey, Nicki jumped on the social network bandwagon and tweeted her status right behind Carey’s Twitter declaration.
Minaj joins the other two “announced” departures of Carey and Randy Jackson. Jackson was the first to be rumoured on his way out and it took a little while for him to confirm the facts.
There can be little doubt that remaining judge Keith Urban is up for the chop as well. Considering that this was the lowest season for ratings since the shows premiere, it seems like a “new broom” policy is in effect to clean out the low rating judges.
With the news of one less seat, the departure of Nicki Minaj and Maria Carey and Randy Jackson being confirmed as leaving American Idol, there will be rush to find replacements before the show starts filming.
News has already come in that Jennifer Hudson is to be one of the judges for season 13 along with rumours that an all alumni judging panel, less on judge’s seat, will be the new normal for the show.
According to the Fox network and the Idol producers, ratings don’t figure into the the departure of Minaj. In a joint statement FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment (along with Fox) said, “Nicki Minaj is a superstar who brought a level of honesty and passion to American Idol and who had a tremendous positive impact on so many contestants this season. Given her extremely busy career, we understand and respect her decision and wish her the best.”
Nicki Minaj and Marian joined the American Idol show to sit in as judges last year along with fellow judging panel newcomer Keith Urban. Randy Jackson was the only “veteran” left on the panel when the three started. Nicki and Mariah tried to “out-diva” one another and their feud made the news. More than the show itself did. And as things go, the judge who’d been on the panel longest was the first to be rumoured to leave.
There is still no news from the Urban camp on whether he will be returning or not and apart from Jennifer Hudson reportedly signing the dotted line as a judge for the new season not a lot has been divulged.
There is the whisper that Jennifer Lopez has been approached with an offer, but that has been neither denied or confirmed by anyone on either side.
Along side the Lopez rumour, there is still talk of the new season being an all alumnus judging panel with finalists and winners from American Idol’s past.
The last rumour is that whoever they chose to be judges on the show, there will be one less. It seems pretty clear that with the show’s low ratings they want to cut down on judges salaries until the event starts drawing in more fans.
So the news that Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey have both joined Randy Jackson in the confirmation that all three are to leave American Idol and only one replacement, Jennifer Hudson, being mentioned; it might be a pretty close race to find the last two judges.
