A New York woman claims that Rihanna’s lipstick gave her herpes at a Rihanna concert. The woman has filed a lawsuit that alleges that she contacted the desease when she sampled a lipstick offered by one of the singers sponsors.
The woman, Starkeema Greenidge is asking for an unidentified amount of money for, “mental anguish and emotional distress” caused by her trying the Rihanna lipstick which is marketed under that name RiRi Woo. The 28 year old waitress said, “This is going to happen over and over again if nothing is done. I wasn’t able to work for two weeks. It cost me a lot of money.”
Greenidge told the Manhattan supreme court that when she went to the Rihanna concert on the 7th of May, she did not have the desease. But when when she stopped by the Mac Cosmetics pop-up shop at the Brooklyn’s Barclay’s center where the gig was held, she contacted herpes.
One of the helpful employees allegedly applied the stick of RiRi Woo lipstick to Starkeema’s lips. Greenidge claims that the female employee did not use a fresh or new lipstick but one that had been used. She said, “[She] didn’t use a fresh or new lipstick tube, but rather one that had been used for other patrons.”
Greenidge also alleges that the employee told her to, “press her lips together and spread the lipstick around.”
Two days later, the 28 year-old waitress found a cold sore on her lip. She went to a clinic and a doctor informed the horrified woman that the bump on her lip was oral herpes. Greenidges legal representative’s claim that, Mac “should have known” they were “exposing patrons to possible spread of disease.”
Greenidge’s lawyers are calling on Mac to start using disposable lipstick or sanitised swabs at pop-up events such as Rihanna concerts, as well as to improve hygiene training for their clerks. The case is still being heard by the Manhattan supreme court.
Rihanna’s RiRi Woo lipstick, which is the first in a “multi-collection” deal with Mac, was launched in February this year. Earlier in May, the 25 year-old singer announced that the initial shipment had already sold out.
Her first men’s perfume, Rogue, will debut in September. With the news out that Rihanna’s Lipstick gave me Herpes as claimed by the woman in New York, the sales might not be quite so successful as the “initial” lipstick.
Rihanna is right in the middle of her world tour and she will be appearing in the United Kingdom on June 10 2013, She and her lipstick will be in Cardiff, Manchester, London, Birmingham and Sunderland.
It appears that the best way to “sample” the new RiRi Woo lipstick is to not try it at the tour venue. Especially not before the case has been seen and a ruling made. If you are not in the United States, you may still want to give trying the “lippy” a pass as rulings like that do not usually apply outside the US borders.
As for the men’s cologne. If I fancied trying it out, I think I would have to think twice. Like Ms Greenidge was before her introduction to the lipstick, I am desease free and really would like to stay that way.
I am not sure what you could catch from cologne, but with the idea of Rihanna’s lipstick giving someone Herpes, as claimed by the young New York woman, I don’t want to take any chances.
