Seth Rogen made a new movie, ‘This is the end’, this time not about porn, but the hot topic of many movies these days: the end of the world. The movie is a ‘Funny or Die’ sketch which has been prolonged, and has some special effects thrown in. A group of guys, most of them funny others only slightly, are together at a party in LA, when events start to happen which were foretold in the Book of Revelation. The devoted are being ushered up to heaven and the others, mainly famous people in Hollywood, have to pay for their sins. They fall into blazing holes in the ground or their are chased by scary looking demons who sport huge genitals. Mister Rogen might have been smoking a bit too much pot when he thought up this masterpiece. It might be better if he actually would stick to pot, and not make movies like ‘This is the end‘.
To make matters worse, or better that’s up to you, the cast consists of: James Franco, without corn rows this time, Jonah Hill, a good friend of Seth and usually plays a grumpy, unpopular kid, Craig Robinson, from The Pineapple express, Seth Rogen, the director himself, Jay Baruchel, the sweet looking guy who usually plays a part that matches his looks, and Danny McBride, Your Highness and The Pineapple express. (In short; the usual group who makes jokes about doing nothing all day, smoking weed as much as possible, and hopefully finding a sexy girl to actually love, instead of being seen as the best friend, or being used by the girl to buy alcohol.)
Is it all bad? Some might say that it exceeds “The Hangover Part III” in a way that ‘The End’ is actually funny at times, and of course doesn’t have the burden of being the third of a franchise. The group of actors can be witty, and can produce fast, humorous one liners. They also don’t have to pretend to be somebody else. They seem to play themselves, which can sometimes be a good thing. Especially when they don’t take themselves too seriously, and can actually handle some criticism:
Danny McBride: [from trailer] Seth, that’s a better performance than you’ve given in your last six movies. Where the fuck was that in Green Hornet, huh?!
The movie does have some surprisingly emotional moments, about bromance of course nothing too serious, but still it makes ‘This is the End‘ stand out. However if this is enough to say that Seth Rogen should change his ways and start producing more movies is up to you. For now he should stick to pot, and not make movies for a while. At least until the box office numbers are in, and the public has spoken.
Lets conclude with these pearls of wisdom from the movie:
Jay Baruchel: Can we please go to f**king Carl’s Jr.
Seth Rogen: Uh. I’m on a cleanse.
Jay Baruchel: So, you’re not drinking, you’re not smoking weed?
Seth Rogen: I’m on a cleanse, I’m not psychotic.
