This is the End (Sony Pictures, R) cracked Emma Watson, 23, up when she saw it. Emma is one of the many stars in this comedy which Seth Rogen co-wrote and co-directed with Evan Goldberg.
This is the End is absurd, hilarious, funny, raunchy, and –oh, yeah — it’s about the end of the world as we know it.
It’s no wonder that Emma Watson was laughing, and why she decided to appear in Rogen’s apocalyptic comedy.
Best known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies, this was a chance to show another side of her acting skills — by playing herself, wielding an ax.
As Emma Watson told CNN at the movie’s premiere in Los Angeles Monday,
“I just thought it was the most absurd, weird, crazy idea. I remember my agent trying to explain it over the phone to me, and me just being like ‘I can’t… why me? Why me?’ And also, just like, ‘this is so bizarre.'”
Hearing the plot description was one thing, but hearing it alone just didn’t do it justice.
According to Emma: “When I read the script, I just found it hilarious, and I was like ‘of course I will do this – this will be hysterical.'”
All of the actors play themselves, and the movie’s plot revolves around the idea of what would happen if a group of famous celebrities just happened to be together at a party at James Franco’s luxurious house when the end of the world was at hand.
If the movie is anything like the trailer, which I’ve included below, This is the End is sure to be one of the funniest comedies of the summer.
Besides Seth Rogen and James Franco, Emma Watson co-stars with Craig Robinson, Michael Cera, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride and Jonah Hill. How could she not find herself cracking up as she watched the premiere?
Emma Watson said that her co-stars cracked her up off-camera, also.
“I mean, they’re all funny,” Emma said. “And I don’t really get the chance to be around comedians very much, so I think I particularly was super into it.”
This is the End lasts 1 hour, 47 minutes. It is rated R, though there are enough sexually suggestive situations in it to warrant a NC-17 adults-only rating, and that’s actually what Seth was going for, he said. He was surprised when the movie received just an R rating.
Though it is hilarious, This is the End contains several drug references, lots of profanity, sex scenes — including one between a human and a demonic beast — and an evil creature from Hell with an erection.
Seth and Evan Goldberg expected that they’d receive the NC-17 rating and then cut some of the scenes out to get an R rating, but that didn’t happen. They were astonished when the ratings board of the Motion Picture Assn. of America went along with the R rating.
This Is the End, which opens June 12, got an R rating for “crude and sexual content throughout, brief graphic nudity, pervasive language, drug use and some violence.”
Take a look at the video trailer for This is the End below. Try not to laugh out loud as you watch it, just try — I double-dare you.
