Jennifer Lopez reenacted the famous birthday signing performance by Marilyn Monroe, bu serenading the leader of Turkmenistan. However Miss Lopez apparently wasn’t aware of the abysmal situation that country is in. There are a lot of human rights issue,s and Jennifer Lopez should have never accepted this gig. Turkmenistan is an embarrassment for Jennifer Lopez, and she should have acted like that.
Turkmenistan is a former Soviet bloc country, and the location where the pop star diva gave her performance last Saturday night. It wasn’t a political event but had something to do with fuel, petrol to be exact. (The party was hosted by China National Petroleum Corp. )
Even thought this party wasn’t political, the country’s leader, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, was there, and basking in the performance of Miss Lopez. Berdimuhamedow is seen as a oppressive ruler and has been criticised by human rights organizations. Human Rights Watch said Turkmenistan as “among the most repressive in the world.” Quite the scary place and definitely not an appropriate venue for Jennifer Lopez to perform, and therefore showing her ignorance/support. Hopefully it was ignorance, and not the blinding attraction of the Dollar bills which no doubt where forked over in heaps.
The United Nations visited Turkmenistan last month, Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Ivan Simonovic commented that the country had made progress in the area of human rights, but “a lot more work is needed to complete this process and to ensure practice is in line with international standards.” Therefore right now Turkmenistan is an embarrassment for Jennifer Lopez.
Jennifer Lopez publicist said there had been a vetting process before Lopez decided to perform there. He added with emphasis that: “Had there been knowledge of human rights issues any kind, Jennifer would not have attended.” Either there is something seriously wrong within Miss Lopez organisation, that after a vetting process nobody informed her that there were issues with the country or she ignored their advice and performed anyway.
Jennifer is not the only celebrity who has been criticised for performing in countries, or for leaders with human rights violations.
For example in 2011, Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank didn’t stop apologizing after attending a birthday party for Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who had been accused of torture and killings; Swank proclaimed that she didn’t have a full understanding of the event.
Beyonce, Nelly Furtado, 50 Cent, Mariah Carey, and even Usher were paid enormous amounts to give an acte de presence during parties linked to the late Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. All of these celebrities were embarrassed, and ashamed by this when they learned about this fact and proclaimed that they would donate their salary to charity, and that they had no knowledge that the party was connected to terrorism. Therefore earning them blood money.
Jennifer Lopez should pause and think what she is going to do about it. At least a statement that she makes, not her publicist, would be a first step. Admitting that it was a mistake, and Turkmenistan was an Embarrassment for her. Afterwards donating the money to charity would be a second. In addition it might be wise for her to vet her own organisation properly in order to avoid this embarrassment in the future.
Do you still support Jennifer Lopez? Or was this the last straw for you? Let us know in the comments.
