Earlier this year, in April, Catherine Zeta-Jones entered a treatment facility to treat her Bipolar II disorder. She was released after this, her second time in a treatment center, presumably much better. Since then, the 43 year-old film star has spoken candidly and reveals what triggered her Bipolar and her secret to still being married to one of the most famous film stars in the world after 13 years and a cancer scare.
Way back in December 2012, Catherine Zeta-Jones spoke to InStyle magazine about her bipolar disorder. She said, “It’s not easy. I’m not the kind of person who likes to shout out my personal issues from the rooftops, but with my bipolar becoming public, I hope fellow sufferers will know it’s completely controllable.” She also said, “I hope I can help remove any stigma attached to it, and that those who don’t have it under control will seek help with all that is available to treat it.”
Just recently, after her release from the treatment facility, she revealed more about her condition. The award winning actress was diagnosed with Bipolar II in 2011. It was caused, apparently, by the stress of her dealing with husband Michael Douglas’ advanced throat cancer and the treatment he required.
The Red 2 actress spoke to Stella magazine about her diagnosis and what triggered the appearance of the Bipolar disorder. Opening up about the experience, Catherine Zeta-Jones said that husband Michael Douglas’ throat cancer diagnosis in 2010 was a “trigger” for her bipolar disorder.
She said, “When Michael was diagnosed with cancer I really thought, ‘you are going to have to wipe me off the floor.’ This happens to people all the time, but it’s still a huge shock when the cards start to fall and you realize, ‘My God, it really is happening to us.’ I thought I didn’t have the tools to cope. But it’s amazing where the strength comes from – from family and friends, from strangers supporting us.”
So she’s clearly gotten a lot of help from the treatment centre. Later she spoke to The Telegraph and talked about how life was now that Douglas had beaten the cancer with chemotherapy and radiotherapy and that he’s now cancer free. We applaud Catherine Zeta Jones for candidly revealing what her Bipolar trigger was and letting the world know her marriage secret. You can see how Michael Douglas fell for this classy lady who supported her husband while he, in turn, supported her.
Without commenting on the controversial claim that Douglas made earlier about how he felt that he’d gotten the throat cancer from too much cunnilingus (oral sex) Zeta-Jones went on to say what life was like with the 68 year-old Oscar winning film star during and after the cancer treatment.
She said, “He’s a very matter-of-fact person. Once he was diagnosed he was like, ‘Okay, what do I do?’ It was very intensive … but he still retained his sense of humor. He was very open with the children. No secrets — they went and saw him having treatment. Together we all coped with everything.”
Catherine Zeta-Jones said that the couple’s struggles made them closer, but that she “wouldn’t wish it on anybody.”
Zeta-Jones also told Stella magazine the secret to the famous couple’s long 13 year marriage despite the 25 year age gap between the two of them. She revealed that the secret was being respectful to one another and giving each person the right amount of “space.”
She it was simply, “Respect, space and a sense of humour. We spend a hell of a lot of time together, so we are careful to maintain our space. We recently had an extension built, to house a closet. It’s like the Tardis – I go in there and never come out.”
Catherine continued, “My husband knocks on the door and says, ‘Can I come in?’ But I’ve got a TV in there, and my daughter brings her friends in – they play shop, put on all my stuff. I could be in there for the whole day, happily.”
She also revealed that despite their similarities, it was their individual differences that kept the marriage fresh and full of healthy romance. She explained that their core personalities were very different. About Michael Douglas she said, “Michael is a schedule freak. He’s constantly looking at the calendar and meticulously checking dates and organising weekends.”
About herself she said, “I just wake up and say, ‘What shall we do today?’ I’m very spontaneous. Given the age difference, what’s remarkable is that we are so similar in so many ways. We have a laid-back, easy-going relationship.”
So it looks like Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas will easily double their 13 year marriage. She showed just how candid and revealing she can be in areas of the truth. She also opened up readily about what triggered her Bipolar and the secret to her long marriage to Michael Douglas. The two obviously have given each other lots of space and respect, the Bipolar spontaneous woman and the “schedule freak” man. We raise our glasses to them both.
