Chicago Police Nab Robbers Targeting Northwest Side Businesses
Grand Central District (25th) Tactical Officers apprehend offenders in getaway car
CHICAGO – Chicago Police arrested and charged two men involved in a pattern of robberies targeting two late night businesses.
Brian Lykins, 27, of the 700 block of S. Burr in University Park, Il. was charged with two felony counts of Aggravated Robbery. Emil Niemi, 27, of the 3600 block of N. Newcastle was charged with one felony count of Aggravated Robbery.
Grand Central District (25th) Tactical Officers were patrolling near the 5400 block of W. North Av. on Friday, June 28th when they spotted a black Mazda driving eastbound shortly before 8 p.m. The officers quickly noticed the car matched the description of a vehicle used during three recent robberies.
Officers performed a traffic stop and noticed the two men inside the car matched the descriptions of offenders who recently robbed a coffee and donut shop in the 5900 block of W. Diversey Av. on June 20th shortly before 11 p.m. Both men were bald and Lykins, a convicted felon, had a tattoo of a horn on each side of his head. Officers also observed a black t-shirt inside the vehicle that was worn by one of the men during one of the robberies.
The officers confirmed surveillance footage from the June 20th robbery and the robberies of the same convenient store, within a ten day span, distinctly matched the wanted offenders.
One of the men would enter the businesses and indicate he was armed with a weapon while demanding the store clerk open the register and hand over cash.
The two robberies of the same convenient store in the 2700 block of N. Harlem Av. occurred at 9:20 p.m. on June 27, 2013 and 1:30 a.m. on June 17, 2013.
