Panama City Beach, Florida– Police have found the body of former Auburn basketball star Korvotney Barber, he apparently died as a result of drowning. He reportedly went missing on Saturday evening.
The 26 year old Barber went swimming with his wife and friend behind the Boardwalk Beach Resort at roughly 7 pm Saturday. There had been warnings against swimming in the area due to hazardous conditions that evening.
Similar conditions halted the search for his body for parts of Sunday. His body washed ashore at 3:49 pm Sunday near the Boardwalk Beach Condominiums and Top of the Gulf Condominiums.
According to the Associated Press, even though police believe Korvotney Barber’s death to be a drowning, they have turned the former Auburn star’s body over to a medical examiner to determine the exact cause of death.
Auburn University expressed its sympathy for the loss of Korvotney Barber. “The Auburn basketball program is deeply saddened to lose one its great players in Korvotney ‘Vot’ Barber. I was fortunate enough to meet Vot just last week when he stopped by my office to introduce himself to me. What an impressive guy. Our prayers are with his family and loved ones,” coach Tony Barbee said in a statement.
Athletic director Jay Jacobs took to Twitter to share his feelings. “My thoughts and heartfelt prayers are with the family and friends of Korvotney Barber during this tremendously difficult time,” he tweeted.
Korvotney Barber enjoyed a successful basketball career at Auburn while with the school from 2006-2009. He averaged 10.8 points per game and 7.2 rebounds. He was a second team All-SEC selection in 2009.
Most recently he played professionally overseas for the Lugano Tigers in Switzerland. While there he averaged 13.2 points per game along with 7.4 rebounds.
The basketball world grieves today, as former Auburn star Korvotney Barber is dead of an apparent drowning at the age of 26.
