Locket, which launched on Thursday for Android phones, will pay you for using your phone — if you agree to turn the front of it into a billboard. You won’t get rich quick but during a year’s time you might pick up an extra $130 bucks.
How much per day can you earn by looking at you phone?
Locket is an app for your Android phone. Data suggests that most people look at their phone’s lock screen more than 100 times per day. Using the app, every one of those looks could put money in your pocket.
That’s because when you look at your phone, you will be viewing ads. Using the new Locket app, you can choose what sort of ads you’d like to view. You just type in your age, gender and location and the app feeds you relevant ads. You earn a penny per view, but Locket right now caps the amount you can earn per hour to three cents, though that could change in the future.
If you happened to look at your phone and checked out the max of three ads per hour for 12 hours a day, you’d earn a whopping 36 cents a day. If you multiply that amount with all of the days of a year, you could earn approximately $130 per year.
How do you get the money you earn?
The money you earn gets saved into a Locket account within the app. You can get the money when you choose to redeem it through PayPal. You can redeem your earnings for cash when you hit the $10.00 mark, and you can earn $1.00 just for referring a friend. Locket is also working on ways for users to redeem their cash via gift cards or by donating the money to your favorite charity.
Though the money you earn isn’t very much, Yunha Kim, 24, the co-founder of the company, says that the one-cent per view cap could be increased when they get other advertisers involved. Also, she argues that besides the money users get, they will get access to good, relevant information when they need it.
According to Kim when she spoke to ABC News:
At first many people say ‘I have enough ads in my life,’ but as soon as they see the application and the beautiful ads they don’t see them as ads.”
Locket’s aim is to present you with ads taht aren’t run-of-the-mill, but ones that are like mini-movies, which will truly interest you and help you when you are making buying decisions. They are working with Fortune 500 companies on creating attractive mobile ads and Locket has even rejected some advertisers that don’t meet their standards.
Though Kim wouldn’t disclose the names of some of the first advertisers, two that it shows you are from AXE, the male body spray, and one from Locket itself.
Six people run Locket. It has received funding from Great Oaks Venture Capital and other private investors.
Amazon’s Kindles are another product that you can buy that shows you ads the company calls “Special Offers,” which include a series of geo-targeted ads. You don’t get paid to watch them, but they bring down the cost of the device itself.
Also, Facebook’s Android Home software takes over the home screen of Android phones with Facebook images and updates and will include advertisements at some point.
Kim feels that ads on the homescreen of your phone can be very useful to some people. She reason that:
You’re not getting anything from seeing ads everywhere. We can show you things like the latest movies and tell you what’s available at a discount around you. Our play is about targeting you better and giving you better ads, while also giving you some pocket money.”
We see ads everywhere we go, at home, on billboards, in newspapers and magazines and before movies. Might as well get paid for viewing them, ones of your choice, using your phone.
