The Jacksonville Jaguars announced today that they have signed fifth round draft pick Denard ‘Shoelace’ Robinson. A quarterback at the university of Michigan, the team does not yet know exactly how it will utilize his skill set, listing him as an ‘Offensive Weapon’ on their depth chart. He is the sixth of eight Jaguars draft picks to sign a contract.
Signing ‘Shoelace’ Robinson comes just in time for the Jaguars, training camp is scheduled to begin for all Jaguars who are under contract on Thursday July 25. The first practice of the year will take place the following day.
The signing is not a surprise to the team or fans. “As I said before, we expect to have all eight draft picks under contract prior to the beginning of training camp,” General Manager of the Jaguars David Caldwell explains in a press release. “We are excited to get Denard under contract. He had a very productive offseason for us and will continue to get better with each practice. He’s passionate about football and has been a very good team player.”
Although he is unlikely to be a quarterback in the National Football League, Robinson is just happy to continue playing the game he loves. “It’s a great feeling to sign my first NFL contract. It’s something I’ve been waiting my whole life for and I’m ready to get to camp later this month and get back to work. I was able to get a feel for the NFL game during the offseason and I look forward to getting the pads on and just keep improving with each practice.”
During his time in Michigan, Denard ‘Shoelace’ Robinson was an incredibly dynamic threat all four years of his college career. Making 37 starts and playing in 29 games overall, he left the program owning the NCAA record for rushing yards by a quarterback with 4,495. His 2010 season set the record for rushing yards with 1,702. In elite company among the college football world, he is one of four to pass for 2,000 and rush for 1,000 in a season. He managed to accomplish this twice.
He earned 2nd team all Big Ten honors after his junior season, he also won the Sugar Bowl that season.
A native of Florida, Robinson will be coming home in a way when he joins the Jacksonville Jaguars this season. It is unclear how the Jaguars will use ‘Shoelace’ Robinson, however as the highlight video below illustrates he is an explosive talent. Jacksonville lacks game-breakers in its offense, and Robinson has the ability to have a great impact if the Jaguars figure out how best to use his talents.
