In an interview for an upcoming piece in Cosmopolitan magazine the ex-fiance of Jason Collins, the NBA player who recently came out of the closet, recently gave her side of the story. The magazine will be on shelves Tuesday.
Carolyn Moos explains that her then fiance was quiet about his sexuality and his coming out of the closet. According to her story, he did not tell her that he was gay until the morning of the day the Sports Illustrated article making the announcement was published. Collins didn’t even tell his fiance about the story, Moos had to find out about it from a friend instead.
Collins had broke off the then couple’s wedding just one month before it was supposed to take place, giving Moos no explanation. She remained confused as to what had gone wrong in their relationship for four years afterwards. In her interview with Cosmopolitan she gives her side of the events that transpired:
“A month before I was set to marry the man I loved, he called off the wedding. I had no idea why. He and I had been together for eight years. We had planned to have children, build a family. Nearly four years later, I got my answer. My former fiancé, Jason Collins, a pro basketball player with the Washington Wizards, announced last spring in Sports Illustrated that he is gay.”
The situation that she is in is not an easy one for Moos. She comes off as saddened and hurt as a result of losing the man she loved, yet understands and supports his situation at the same time. She attempts to explain her feelings in the interview:
“I empathize with Jason and support him. But at the same time, I remain deeply hurt by him. I wish he could have been honest with me years ago. I feel like there are two Jasons now—the man I fell in love with and the man I’m trying so hard to understand. He’s being hailed as a pioneer, but I believe true heroism is a result of being honest with yourself and with those you love.”
Jason Collins has not made any efforts to talk to his former fiance since coming out according to Moos. “I am sad that the media seems to be a higher priority,” she says. “I hope this changes in the coming weeks, as I value open dialogue more than anything.”
Since coming out, Jason Collins has received endless attention from the media, labeled as a pioneer for the LGBT community. Many believe that his announcement will spur many other closeted members of the LGBT community in the sporting world to come out and embrace their identities. Soccer player Robbie Rogers has came out since Collins, and returned to the MLS as the first openly gay soccer player.
