Harry Belafonte is a well respected actor and activist in the Black community and has been for decades. During his prime in Hollywood he had women swarming all over him. He had the looks, talent and charm and he was one of the few Black American actors to get self-respecting work in the earlier days of Hollywood.
Harry Belafonte is still loved by women and fans worldwide. His opinions are still respected by many. Now, the legendary actor has gone on the attack and attacked hip hop icon JayZ, who recently dropped the hyphen from his name. The actor has attacked Hov and other entertainers for not taking social responsibility while boasting about Bruce Springsteen.
It is true there are many entertainers who don’t take social responsibility but some also keep that part of their lives private.
JayZ just last weekend protested with wife Beyonce along with Trayvon Martin’s mom and brother in New York. JayZ has in recent years vocalized his opinion in both business and politics including endorsing current President, President Obama.
Now, there are these new attacks on Jay, and Harry Belafonte recently endorsed and was boasting about Bruce Springsteen.
My respects to Springsteen but why must you, Harry Belafonte tear down what Jay is doing while praising Springsteen.
Makes you wonder where was Mr. Belafonte when Lil Wayne made those Emmett Till remarks or Rick Ross when he made the rape comments.
If you are going to stand for the Black community then stand for it but don’t attack those who do try to make a change within it.
Just a few hours ago JayZ released this statement voicing his thoughts on what Mr Belafonte has said:
“I’m offended by that because first of all, and this is going to sound arrogant, but my presence is charity. Just who I am. Just like Obama’s is. Obama provides hope. Whether he does anything, the hope that he provides for a nation, and outside of America is enough. Just being who he is. You’re the first black president. If he speaks on any issue or anything he should be left alone…I felt Belafonte he just went about it wrong. Like the way he did it in the media, and then he big’d up Bruce Springsteen or somebody. And it was like, “whoa,” you just sent the wrong message all the way around…Bruce Springsteen is a great guy. You’re this Civil Rights activist and you just big’d up the white guy against me in the white media. And I’m not saying that in a racial way. I’m just saying what it is. The fact of what it was. And that was just the wrong way to go about it.”
Thank you JayZ for your words and to Harry Belafonte this is where the Black community goes wrong. We are always quick to criticize one- another instead of facing one another and talking it out respectfully. We need to respect one another so that others will respect us and our opinions as well. We have come too far now to be calling each other out like this. We should be working together not going on TV or any other media outlet and disrespecting/bickering with one another.
Much respect to both Harry Belafonte and JayZ, and may they soon work out their differences.
