The 37 year-old actor tied the knot with longtime lover Justin after almost two years of dating. Ferguson’s rep confirmed the marriage to People, and revealed that playwright/screenwriter Tony Kushner conducted the wedding ceremony. Ferguson, who plays lawyer Mitchell Pritchett on the popular ABC series, asked his 27 year-old boyfriend to marry him when the couple were in Mexico last year. Mikita obviously said yes!
Us Weekly reported that the two had well over 200 guests at their reception. The list of well wishers who helped the newly married couple celebrate their legal union included Ferguson’s co-star’s Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell and Eric Stonestreet, as well as pals Jerry O’ Connell, Rebecca Romijn, Zachary Quinto, Isaac Mizrahi, Arnold Germer, Nigel Barker, Cat Deeley, Mary Murphy, Tyce Diorio, and Padma Lakshmi.
The newlyweds held their celebratory event at 82 Mercer space, which was organized by wedding planner, Bryan Rafanelli.
The two had always planned to get married in New York, even though they both live in California. Ferguson said that they chose New York because, “that’s where it was legal.” He went on to explain that, “Weddings are expensive, y’all, and we wanted to give that money to a state that accepted us as an equal. We’re too far down the planning path to change.”
The newlyweds asked that wedding guests not give them gifts, instead they asked that donations be given to their marriage equality charity Tie The Knot, to help other same-sex couples win equal rights to marry in their states.
The two men started off their wedding celebrations on Friday night with a sunflower themed rehearsal dinner at Harding’s Restaurant in New York City’s Flatiron neighborhood. They and their guests then had their fill of BLTs and short ribs, and enjoyed wine spritzers and strawberry martinis.
Despite Ferguson saying that New York City was chosen for the legality issue of them getting married, the Emmy nominated actor has a history with the city and Mikita loves Broadway, so the “Big Apple” was always going to be number one in the couples books as a wedding location.
On Saturday morning, before the ceremony, Mikita got onto his Twitter account and tweeted, “Thought about going to the gym this morning then LITERALLY laughed out loud at myself & rolled over to keep watching Patti LuPone youtubes.”
Both men are longtime equal rights activists, and they have developed a very stylish line of ties in a collection called Tie The Knot. The neckwear line raises awareness about equality and donates all of the proceeds from sales to LGBT efforts.
We don’t know if either of the two men wore any of their line of neckwear to the ceremony or the reception afterward, but we do know that at least one of the newlyweds are very happy. Ferguson got onto his Twitter account on Sunday morning and tweeted, “Never been happier. XO Goodnight!”
The marriage of Jesse Tyler Ferguson to the love of his life, Justin Mikita in Manhattan, will be the start of a very happy life together and we congratulate the newly married couple!
