With comic book movies being all the rage these days, it is now the question of who will play the character that comic book readers know so well. They chose right when Robert Downey Jr. was selected to play the role of Tony Stark/Iron Man. Nick Fury was also cast with the person I feel that became the best selection Samuel L. Jackson. But there have been many that have played a comic book super hero who at first (for me) seemed perfect for the role, but after watching another take their place, they weren’t the right choice. But the question now is who will play the sorcerer supreme Doctor Strange?
Latino Review, which has been parceling out what it contends are details of Marvel’s Doctor Strange script, now reports; “trusted sources” say the studio wants Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play the Sorcerer Supreme.’
“Now at press time, we are not saying that an offer has been made, that talks have even engaged and who knows, Levitt and his team are probably unaware, BUT we are hearing that Marvel execs internally are discussing that Levitt is who they figure would be ideal.”
With a run that includes Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Looper and the upcoming Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, it’s likely Gordon-Levitt is on the wish lists of a lot of studios. In fact, Doctor Strange isn’t even Gordon-Levitt’s first brush with Marvel Studios, as he was one of many, many young male stars considered for the Star-Lord role in Guardians of the Galaxy. He was eliminated from the running when he opted to do Sin City: A Dame to Kill For instead, but now he may get his shot at joining the MCU yet.
Even Latino Review concedes it can’t say for sure whether anyone in Gordon-Levitt’s camp has been contacted about Doctor Strange; surely, Marvel would wait until the movie has been officially announced, and possibly a director in place, before it began pursing potential stars.
That official announcement could come as soon as Saturday, during Marvel’s Hall H presentation at Comic-Con International in San Diego. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has already confirmed that Doctor Strange is part of the Phase Three plans, and it seems likely the project will be matched with a 2016 or 2017 release date during the panel.
Comic-Con is this weekend, and I would have reported all the good news that was to be released first hand, but I will not be able to attend. I hope that the news that comes confirms Joseph Gordon-Levitt at playing Doctor Strange or at least some comic book character that would fit his acting prowess. Yes, I’m aware that he was supposed to (at least looked like it for a short time) play Batman in a Justice League movie, but if he played two iconic characters what would that do for comic book fans? I know for one that Marvel better get things strapped down before DC, and WB do. I also can’t wait for other news for the future in movies.
