On July 23, 2013 at approximately 5:00 p.m., patrol officers responded to the 9000 block of Crystal Rock Circle to an in progress Burglary. The home owner reported that he had come home and found an unknown man wearing only underwear and socks on his couch threatening to kill him. The home owner then backed out of his home and called police.
Patrol officers arrived and contained the suspect inside of the home. Crisis Intervention Team officers began to talk to the suspect through a security door but the suspect would not comply with their requests to come out. Officers further observed that the suspect was armed with a knife and a hammer.
LVMPD Crisis Negotiators and SWAT Officers responded to the scene. Negotiations continued for approximately 2 hours with no success. The suspect was unresponsive to any attempts to have him surrender peacefully. It was then decided that a SWAT entry was necessary to take the suspect into custody. SWAT Officers entered the home and initially deployed several less than lethal tactics to bring the suspect him into custody. The armed suspect was able to overcome all less lethal options and charged the SWAT officers with a knife and hammer. Two
officers were forced to fire several rounds at the suspect causing him to fall to the ground.
Officers then attempted to take him into custody and render aid. The suspect continued to fight striking medical personnel with his fists. The suspect was then taken into custody and transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
