Pierce Brosnan’s daughter lost her three year battle with ovarian cancer dying in London last week at the age of 41. Charlotte is survived by her husband Alex; her two children Isabella and Lucas, and her brothers Christoper and Sean and her father, Pierce Brosnan.
The 60 year-old Brosnan released a statement to PEOPLE that said, “On June 28 at 2 p.m. my darling daughter Charlotte Emily passed on to eternal life, having succumbed to ovarian cancer. She was surrounded by her husband Alex, children Isabella and Lucas and brothers Christopher and Sean.”
The James Bond actor added, “Charlotte fought her cancer with grace and humanity, courage and dignity. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our beautiful dear girl. We pray for her and that the cure for this wretched disease will be close at hand soon. We thank everyone for their heartfelt condolences.”
Brosnan was filming the spy thriller November Man in Eastern Europe when he rushed back to his daughter’s bedside, according to the Telegraph.
Charlotte’s mother, Cassandra Harris was an Australian actress and a former Bond girl who had two children from a previous marriage when she married Brosnan in 1980. Pierce adopted Charlotte and Christopher and they took his surname after their biological father died in 1986.
Cassandra got ill while filming in India in 1987 and after a long battle with the same disease that killed her daughter Charlotte, died in 1991. Brosnan raised the ten 8 year-old Sean on his own. Cassandra’s own mother died of ovarian cancer as well.
In an interview with the English newspaper The Daily Express earlier this year, Pierce said that when he married Cassandra, “We just clicked as a family. Charlotte and Chris have just been amazing in my life.”
Somewhat ironically Brosnan’s new film Love Is All You Need is about a widower who falls in love with a hairdresser suffering from cancer. Brosnan was able to draw on his own experiences that included the pain that he’d gone through when Cassandra died.
In another interview with the English news site Mirror online, he said, “I went through it all, very publicly. Such things draw a mark across your heart and it’s always a part of your life. To watch someone you love have their life eaten away – bit by bit, by this insidious and horrid disease – becomes an indelible part of your psyche.”
Now Brosnan has faced that heartbreak yet again with the loss of his 41 year-old daughter. He will no doubt be there for her husband Alex and their two children. He’ll know first-hand what Alex is going through and despite his own grief, help the family who’ve just lost a vital part of themselves.
Although it’s not been publicised or confirmed, it appears that Charlotte Brosnan may have had the same genetic problem that Angelina Jolie discovered that she had. The BRCA-1 gene that causes cancer in the same family line. Jolie also lost her mother, aunt, and grandmother to cancer and had a double mastectomy as a preventative measure and is apparently going to have her ovaries removed later.
The news that Pierce Brosnan’s daughter Charlotte died in London last week from ovarian cancer is tragic and another sign that this horrible disease is still striking with apparent impunity against its victims. Our sympathy goes out to Pierce and her family. No details about funeral arrangements have been released at this time.
