The University of North Carolina and coach Roy Williams have suspended PJ Hairston in the aftermath of a reckless driving charge this weekend. The leading scorer for the Tarheels last season, Hairston has had an active off season for the wrong reasons, and finds himself facing an indefinite suspension as a result of his actions.

This time he was pulled over for reckless driving. He was driving his girlfriend’s 2008 Acura TL on Interstate 85 around 4:30 pm when he was stopped by police. The reason for the stop was that he was travelling at 93 mph in a 65 mph zone. He is scheduled to appear in court on August 30.

Earlier this off season he was arrested on marijuana charges. Although the charges were later dropped, his vehicle was stopped at a routine checkpoint where marijuana was later found in the vehicle. Hairston also didn’t have a license at the time of the incident.

Roy Williams understands that behavior such as this can become a distraction in a locker room, and therefore cannot be tolerated. In a statement earlier this month he explained that “other issues have been written about recently that are disturbing and bother me deeply,” Williams said not tolerating his star guard’s antics. “Our basketball program is based on great ideals and these issues are embarrassing. These are not common in my 10 years as head coach at UNC and they will all be dealt with harshly and appropriately at the correct time to ensure that our program will not be compromised.”

PJ Hairston’s talent is hard to deny, the guard lead the Tar Heels in scoring his sophomore season last year averaging 14.6 points per game. No easy feat to accomplish given that North Carolina is one of the most successful college basketball programs in the nation.

Suspended indefinitely following his latest charges for reckless driving, PJ Hairston must prove to North Carolina and coach Roy Williams that he can change his ways if he wants to resume his collegiate basketball career any time soon.
