Randy Travis is now stabilized, alert and awake. While he is listed medically still in critical condition, he is stable. Country fans can took a moment to take a deep breath. Dr. Gary Erwin an Intensivist at the Heart Hospital Baylor Plano reported today,
“He is awake and alert, interacting with his family and friends and beginning to start doing some early physical therapy.” This has been a much needed announcement for Travis’ family, friends and fans. It is also a sign of hope since Travis was admitted into the Heart Hospital Baylor Plano on July 8, a day after his stroke.
Just to touch the timeline of Travis; he suffered a stroke July 7 after being admitted for presumptive cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. Dr. Erwin states it will still take a two to three weeks for the country crooner to fully stabilize his heart, hence the critical condition status. Dr. Erwin stated Travis “is breathing with the help of the ventilator and [we] hope to have him weaned off of that very soon.” It is heart warming to hear that Travis is alert and awake, and fans can rest easy that his critical condition is standard procedure.
Travis’ doctors and fiancee Mary Davis shared a video discussing Travis’ healing path and her gratitude,
Cardiac surgeon Dr. Michael Mack reflected on the health riddled path Travis has been on stating that Travis,
“did suffer an acute viral illness over the past three weeks, but that seems to have tipped over a more chronic condition, he has what’s called idiopathic cardiomyopathy, which means he has scarring of his heart muscle that is causing his heart to be weak and not able to support his circulation without help of either medical devices of medication.”
Cardiomyopathy is a genetic fact in Travis’ family and his hospitalization has brought this troubling condition to surface. The doctors shared that brain scans are showing brain swelling is decreasing and this is a positive sign that can lead to a stronger recovery.
Cardiomyopathy refers to a thickening in the heart muscle, and as the conditions worsens, the heart becomes weaker. This reduced the ability to pump blood and can create irregular heartbeats also called arrhythmia. The condition is said to be inherited or acquired. The term of acquiring simply means you developed the diseases due to another condition or factor. Travis had been for some time with a virus which could have triggered the condition. In addition, he has a family history of inheriting the condition as well.
