Demetrious Johnson established himself as one of the sport’s elite champions by retaining his Flyweight title against John Moraga at UFC on Fox 8. Mighty Mouse overwhelmed his challenger throughout the fight en route to an armbar finish in the final round.
After four rounds Johnson already had the fight won on the judges scorecards. Heading into the final round many fighters would have taken their foot off the gas and coasted to an easy, well-earned victory. That is what makes Mighty Mouse different, he was not satisfied with a decision.
“Even though I was ahead on the scorecards, I’ve never just relaxed and just coasted by. My job is to finish and to push the pace. I just took it and so happened it happened,” Johnson said after the fight.
Using explosive takedown after explosive takedown to control his opponent, he continually worked for an arm submission throughout the fight. Moraga’s arm eventually was caught in the fifth round, causing referee Herb Dean to step in and stop the fight.
“He couldn’t have fought a more perfect, on point fight tonight. He just looked amazing,” said UFC president Dana White.
With the hometown crowd chanting “Mighty Mouse! Mighty Mouse! Mighty Mouse!” from the onset of the fight, Demetrious Johnson was able to put on a show for the fans at UFC on Fox 8.
With the easy victory, it is beginning to look like he is entering the ranks of Georges St. Pierre and Jon Jones, as champions with no equal in their weight division.
In the post fight conference Johnson threw out the idea of moving up to Bantamweight and attempting to capture both belts. Dominick Cruz is currently the 135 pound champion.
For John Moraga, he was able to establish a limited amount of success while the two men were standing. A major shot was landed in the fourth round, making an upset appear possible. The bridge of Johnson’s nose was split open by Moraga’s fist, causing the champion to stumble back towards the fence. Mighty Mouse was able to take the fight to the ground and regain control, and Moraga never posed a significant threat again.
Demetrious Johnson defended his title and put a perfect ending to what probably was the best week of his life by defeating John Moraga at UFC on Fox 8. Just eight days before the fight, he and his wife gave birth to their first child.
