Amber Alert for Hannah and Ethan Anderson: Abducted by James Lee DiMaggio [Video]
CHP Needs Your Help
An Amber Alert was issued at 5 p.m. Monday for the two missing children, Hannah Anderson, 16, and her brother, Ethan, 8. The California Highway Patrol’s emergency notification and tactical alert center activated an amber alert for the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department in San Diego and Imperial Counties.
The abduction occurred on August 3, 2013 at 5:00pm in the City of Boulevard, San Diego County, CA. The children were reported missing Sunday by their maternal grandparents, who are believed to live in San Diego County.
According to the CHP, Hannah Anderson and Ethan Anderson were abducted from the city of Boulevard on Saturday, and the suspect is believed to be headed toward either Texas or Canada, according to the CHP.
Hannah, 16, is 5 feet 7, 115 pounds with blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a belly button ring, a nose stud and pierced ears. Ethan, 8, is 4 feet 11 and 65 pounds with sandy blonde hair.
A motorist driving up Interstate 5 told the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Monday night he saw a vehicle in Red Bluff that is described in a statewide Amber Alert for two children abducted out of San Diego County, however officers were unable to locate the vehicle in the area.
The driver of a moving truck told the CHP he saw a blue, four-door Nissan Versa headed north on I-5 as he was passing through Red Bluff.
The motorist who reported seeing the matching vehicle around 11:35 p.m. was unable to read the license plate and could not keep up with the vehicle, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Ross said. Multiple CHP units were in the area and were unable to locate the vehicle that the truck driver described, he said. “It was one of those hopeful calls,” Ross said. “Of course it might have been but you never know.”
The suspect accused of abducting the two children is James Lee DiMaggio, 40, white and 5 feet, 9 inches and weighing 150 pounds with brown hair and eyes. He was last seen driving a four-door blue Nissan Versa, with a California license plate No. 6WCU986.
The bodies of a woman and child were found Monday inside a burned up rural house in Boulevard, near the United States and Mexico border in San Diego County, and the man who owns and lives in the home, DiMaggio, is also suspected of killing her and abducting Hannah and Ethan Anderson.
Sheriff’s officials held a news conference several hours after the alert was issued to ask for the public’s help in locating the children and the suspect, James Lee DiMaggio, 40, of Boulevard. DiMaggio could be headed to Texas or Canada, the California Highway Patrol said Tuesday.
Authorities believe either one or both of the children were abducted and are in danger, and they are working nonstop to find them, sheriff’s homicide Lt. Glenn Giannantonio said. The FBI is assisting in the investigation.
DiMaggio and Anderson were described as being close platonic friends and were not believed to be involved in a romantic relationship, the lieutenant said.
DiMaggio is suspected of killing the children’s mother, Christina Anderson, 44, of Lakeside, and setting a fire Sunday night at his Boulevard residence, the lieutenant said. It was not disclosed whether Anderson was killed by the fire or another means. Remains of burned weapons were found in the house, Giannantonio said.
Firefighters found Anderson’s body when they responded shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday to a blaze at the house and detached garage on Ross Avenue, south of Old Highway 80. DiMaggio owned the property and lived there alone, Giannantonio said.
Sheriff’s bomb-arson investigators who were sifting through the rubble of the burned buildings at the East County home also found the remains of a child, he said. The child’s identity and cause of death have not been determined. It was not disclosed whether the body might be either of Anderson’s children. A dog was also found dead inside the house.
The CHP asks anyone who sees the Andersons, DiMaggio or his vehicle to call the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department at 858-565-5200.
DiMaggio is described as white, 5 feet 9 inches tall, 150 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He may have shaved off a mustache and beard, the lieutenant said. Anyone who sees DiMaggio should not try to detain him but call 911, Giannantonio said. It was unknown whether he might he armed.
Again, the names of the abducted children are Hannah Anderson, a 16-year-old white female and Ethan Anderson, an 8-year-old while male. The suspect is James Lee DiMaggio, a 40-year-old white male. He is possibly driving a 2013 blue Nissan Versa 4-door with a California license plate number 6WCU986. If seen contact San Diego Sheriff’s Department at (858) 565-5200.
Anyone with information about the case can also call the sheriff’s homicide unit at (858) 974-2321 and after hours at (858) 565-5200, or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. Tipsters are eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.
