New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is a Republican and a Catholic. Rebuking both groups, he has openly stated that ‘people are born gay.’
He signed a bill forbidding therapists in his state from performing the misnamed ‘conversion therapy. New Jersey has become the second state to pass such a law, following California.
The bill restricts license therapist from attempting to make gay children straight.
Christie says he believes ‘people are born gay and homosexuality is not a sin.’ That view is inconsistent with his Catholic faith.
The bill was passed in June with bipartisan support. Gay rights activists were uncertain if Christie would sign the bill.
Christie said the health risks of the children outweighed parental rights.
He took action on other legislation, including a bill on gun control, which he did not sign.
He is also in favor of making medical marijuana available to children, but rejected a section of the legislation and returned it to the state legislature for revision.
