An escaped convict was shot and killed Tuesday by the homeowner he had taken hostage.

Jerome and Carolyn Mauderly, 71 and 66, were sleeping when Long entered their home on Monday. Before the Mauderlys realized what was happening Long took the shotgun that retired prison guard Mauderly used for protection and and held the couple with it.

From Monday night into Tuesday morning Long ransacked the families home and used their cellphone to make calls. At one point Long left the shotgun in the kitchen and went upstairs still carrying a pistol. Seizing the opportunity Jerome Mauderly managed to grab his shotgun. As Long was coming back downstairs Mauderly fatally shot the escapee while Carolyn Mauderly called 911.

Authorities have said that the Mauderly will not be charged as he acted in self-defense.
