On Extreme Weight Loss (8 p.m. EST/7 p.m. C) on ABC this Tuesday, August 6, the episode will be about Alyssa Stommen, 22, of Michigan, and her year-long quest to lose weight, aided by transformational coach Chris Powell and his wife, Heidi.
When she was just 10 years old, Alyssa and her sister Ashley were in a horrific car accident that took her mother’s life. The Ford Tempo they were in struck a tree off Douglas Avenue in Cooper Township, according to a Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department.
Laura Stommen, Alyssa’s mother, was ejected from the vehicle as it rolled over. She was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Bronson Methodist Hospital. According to the police report, neither girl was severely hurt in the accident.
In response to that trauma, Alyssa turned to food to find comfort. She overate, and eventually the 5-foot-six-inch tall Alyssa ballooned to her present 414 lbs. At the start of the episode, Alyssa who lives with her dad. She is delighted when Chris tells her the good news that she has been selected for the show.
However, just a few weeks into her weight loss journey, she begins vomiting during her morning workouts. Chris explains to Alyssa that her body is detoxifying from her poor diet. To prove it, he tries eating her past diet himself for one day, and it results in Chris vomiting!
Chris then calls in celebrity trainer Drew Manning, author of Fit to Fat to Fit . Manning intentionally gained and lost 80 pounds in a year, all so that he could better share his experience with living on a bad diet.
Alyssa, at the 6-month mark, gets a chance to fulfill a lifelong dream of learning to snowboard, and her teacher is none other than Olympic champion Lindsey Jacobellis. Chris likes to give the people he helps on their year-long weight loss journeys extra incentives, and with Alyssa, on of the dreams he helps her to achieve is to learn how to snowboard.
It will be interesting to see if the incentives Chris offers her if she meets her weight loss goals will help Alyssa.
Chris feels that the clients he works with need to change from the inside out, and they need to confront their inner demons and fears in order to ever get beyond them. That’s why he takes Alyssa back to the very location where the cash occurred that claimed her mother’s life. I’m sure that will be one of the most dramatic moments of the episode.
Late in the year, Alyssa admits to Chris that she has been binging and purging. Chris brings in his wife, Heidi, who dealt with her own eating disorder, to help counsel her. Chris is worried that Alyssa is harming herself, and she wants her to realize that binging and purging is not a healthy way for her to lose weight.
Can Alyssa get back on track? Extreme Weight Loss airs Tuesday, August 6 (8:00-10:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.
