Judges to be Defeated by Republican Obstructionism

President Obama’s nominees to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals will be defeated by Republican obstructionism.  And they are giving no reasons why they object to his nominees.  If the GOP follows through with their threats, another nuclear showdown over filibuster rules could ensue.

Thursday, before Congress deserted Washington for five weeks of a ‘much needed vacation,’ Patricia Millett was narrowly approved by the Judiciary Committee along party lines 10-8.

Republicans claim the court is underworked, and the positions do not need to be filled.

“I have nothing against her but we should not be adding to that bench,” Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), a senior Republican on the committee, told TPM on Thursday afternoon.

Democrats claim that the effort to eliminate the judges is merely an attempt to continue the right wing slant the court now has.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick J. Leahy says Democrats should change the rules if Republicans insist on ‘having it their way.’

“I think that the rules change will come back on the table if it’s filibustered because it is one thing if you had somebody who is not qualified. These people are extraordinarily well-qualified,” the Vermont Democrat said of three nominees pending to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals in an interview that will air Sunday on C-SPAN’s “Newsmakers.”

The D.C. Circuit Court is considered to be the second most important in the nation, just below the Supreme Court.

“The D.C. Circuit decides some of the most important cases in our nation, with significant impact on the lives of all Americans,” said Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT). “This court must be allowed to operate at full strength, and to that end, I applaud the Judiciary Committee’s approval of Patricia Millett’s nomination today.”

Our government is acting like two street gangs, both protecting their territory.  Our congress is immature and childish.  No effort is being made to care for the needs of the American people, their loyalty is to their gang first.

Politicians are involved with gamesmanship, not governing.  This article demonstrates once again that we have the worst government in the world.

If these judges are defeated because of Republican political obstructionism; that is additional proof that our Republic form of government has failed.
