While Justin Timberlake will have an array of others surrounding him tonight at the VMAs, he is poised to take over the event. Not only is the singer expected to be presented with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, but the rumor on every social network has been one of a legitimate *NSYNC reunion. The group, who will likely perform a number of their hits tonight, has not been together since at least 2007. They first formed in Orlando in 1995.
The Brooklyn stage will feature a variety of hit-making entertainers like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Robin Thicke, Miley Cyrus, and – performing new single “Started From the Bottom” for the first time – Drake.
Still, there is little doubt at all that Justin will be reuniting with his old *NSYNC band mates tonight, and taking over the evening by doing so. Former member Joey Fatone is the only person who has denied the rumor, claiming that while he will indeed be in New York tonight, it is only because of a visit with family. If the latest tweet on the group’s official Twitter account means anything, though, it is yet another indication that viewers can look forward to a big performance:
Clearly, the men of *NSYNC have already been getting prepared for a slew of tweets following what may be a live performance. The group set up the profile just yesterday, and have already gained more than 100,000 followers. They have successfully generated a great deal of attention in a rather short amount of time.
Others have recognized the potential for a show stopper, too. Just take Harry Styles of One Direction, who said that he and others are “just hoping we’re not doing anything after them because anything after ‘N Sync this year is going to be irrelevant.”
There is also the interesting fact that MTV is going without a host at this year’s Video Music Awards ceremony. Potentially, this move could leave a lot of room for improvising a total takeover of the show on someone’s part. Maybe it would even give Justin an opportunity to seize control of the stage unexpectedly. There is no host, of course, to upstage.
Justin himself has already won seven trophies from past VMAs. But even tonight, he will be attending the ceremony with the best-selling record of the year, The 20/20 Experience, under his belt. Its sequel album is set for release in September. Along with selections by Thicke, Bruno Mars, and Taylor Swift, Timberlake’s video “Mirrors” has also been nominated for the category of Video of the Year. He is up for five additional awards as well.
The buzz over Justin has even been carrying over lately into the film realm. A seasoned actor, he has been the subject of an interesting rumor regarding the planned remake of Annie. Though Sony denies it, it was being reported not long ago that Justin might be portraying the character of billionaire Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks.
Regardless of whether the *NSYNC performance actually happens, Justin Timberlake just might be taking over the VMA ceremonies tonight with all the chatter and admiration he has been generating all week.
