With the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) happening tomorrow night, it is truly anyone’s guess whether Kanye West is likely to interrupt singer Taylor Swift – an expected presenter – again if given the opportunity. Lately, though, it seems that Kanye is presenting himself as being a bit more level-headed. Following the recent birth of his daughter North and his relationship with Kim Kardashian, he has started to express the idea that he has gone through a little growing up.
Certainly fresh in the memory of many is the infamous stunt that Kanye pulled at the 2009 awards ceremony. When Taylor Swift was accepting her award for Best Female video, the Chicago rapper butted in on her moment with a juvenile “I’ma let you finish,” trying to bring all the focus back onto Beyoncé, who had been nominated for the same award.
In an interview with Kris Jenner on Friday, Kanye described that time around 2009 as one in which he was far more immature. “The last thing I would want to happen to my daughter,” he explained, when asked about future boyfriends for baby North, “is [for] some crazy drunk black guy in a leather shirt to come up and cut her off at an awards show.” Kayne also confessed that he “was just a crazy rockstar” at the time, adding that all of his mishaps in the past have just been a way of shaping him, things which “will help me make better decisions in the future.”
On the other hand, it was as recently as June that Kanye spoke with the New York Times and flat-out denied any regret about upstaging Taylor Swift at all. “If anyone’s reading this waiting for some type of full-on, flat apology for anything,” he barked, “they should just stop reading right now.” Even then, he was still talking about the strong feelings he had for girlfriend Kim Kardashian. So one might have to suppose that it took the birth of North West to finally change his perspective. Kanye’s haughty and unapologetic attitude, at least, seems to have toned down. It is quite different for him to finally be admitting not only that the episode was one of his mistakes, but that it was something to learn from.
The interruption incident was a shocker at the time, but even Taylor herself shows self-confidence enough to still be laughing about the whole thing. A few days ago, her tour partner Ed Sheeran shared a photo on Instagram of some homemade jam from the singer, with the following message penned on its label:
“Yo Ed-I’m really happy 4 you and I’m gonna let u finish but this is the best JAM OF ALL TIME. -T.”
While Kanye West might not be interrupting Taylor Swift in the same spirit that he did four years ago, it is still likely that some kind of passing reference will be made to the original incident during tomorrow’s VMA ceremonies. Not only will they probably cross paths again, but it has been rumored all over Twitter that Kanye and Taylor will be sitting next to each other, with the members of One Direction not too far behind.
