In a new single off of John Mayer’s album ‘Paradise Valley,’ debuting on Aug. 20, Mayer with girlfriend Katy Perry, sing out their love in a song entitled ‘Who You Love.’
For those of you who aren’t aware, Katy Perry and John Mayer began dating last summer before taking a break back in the early part of 2013. Now, it seems, they have patched things up and are stronger than before.
In the lyrics of their duet, John Mayer talks about how he didn’t know what to do and ran away, but that he couldn’t stop loving her even as he tried. A beautiful sentiment and, I think, one may people these days can relate to. There are so many distraction in our world now, not to mention information over load.
It seems that love and relationship has the potential to pull us off our chosen path at times, falling into the dream of what could be. While this is only speculation as to whether or not that is what happened to John Mayer, it seems to be a fairly common theme in the human experience. One can only imagine how much more intense romance can be as a celebrity, every moment documented and commented upon. It is a refreshing moment of bravery as Perry and Mayer sing out their love, showing their hearts to the world audience.
Katy Perry not only sang, but was allowed to write her own lyrical response to John’s part. It was a meaningful collaboration from what Perry and Mayer have stated.
John Mayer had said that he wanted to hear her unfiltered response to his lyrics, which were an honest look at why he broke things off with Perry in the first place.
“I started singing ‘And my girl, she ain’t the one I saw coming / Sometimes I don’t know which way to go / And I tried to run before, but I’m not running anymore.’ In 2013, modern-day times that’s sweet. Because there’s so many other things to occupy your time that you can do for yourself. That is to say, I tried to be alone, but I can’t.” John said about the song in an interview with Billboard magazine.
Katy Perry’s lyrical response in the song was equally as honest.
“My boy, he ain’t the one that I saw coming / And some have said his heart’s too hard to hold / And it takes a little time / But you should see him when he shines / Cause you never wanna let that feeling go.”
It seems that even though this is obviously an honest exploration of their relationship, that it remains a universal theme. The response has been a favorable one since the single’s release, but that may come on the heels of the fact that it is an insight into the couple’s romance.
However it all turns out, it is good to see such creative and beloved people find love between them. It can be so difficult to find a love and relationship that lasts, especially under the harsh scrutiny of the entertainment world. May this be just the first of many collaborations between the two lovers.
