Lea Michele won the Teen Choice Award for her role as Rachel Berry on the Fox favourite Glee. When she came up to accept the award, in a tearful and touching moment, she turned the acceptance into a dedication to her late boyfriend Cory Monteith.
It was her first public appearance after her boyfriend Cory Monteith, who played her character Rachel’s boyfriend, Finn Hudson in the show, died of a heroin and alcohol overdose in a Vancouver hotel room on July 13 this year.
The 26 year-old Glee star took the opportunity to thank her fans for all their “love and support” during “these very difficult past few weeks.” She then dedicated her award to Cory Monteith.
In her acceptance speech an emotional Lea said, “I promise that with your love, we’re going to get through this together. He was very special to me and also to the world, and we were very lucky to witness his incredible talent, his handsome smile and his beautiful, beautiful heart.
Lea continued, “So whether you knew him personally or just as [his character] Finn Hudson, Cory reached out, and he became a part of all of our hearts and that’s where he’ll stay forever.”
The Glee program also won the Teen Choice Award for Choice Comedy Show. A short while before Lea Michele collected her surfboard, other cast members from the show accepted the TCA award. Their acceptance of the show’s award was also turned into a dedication to their missing cast mate, Cory Monteith. Amber Riley, who plays Mercedes Jones in the show said, “Cory was like a brother to us. He was always ready to sign an autograph or take a picture with a fan, and he loves you Gleeks.”
Glee co-star Jenna Ushkowitz, who plays Tina Cohen-Chang in the show then said, “We know that Cory would have wanted us to dedicate this award to you guys.” It was a lovely gesture that preceded Lea Michele and her tearful Teen Choice Award dedication to Cory Monteith and it spoke volumes about how the entire cast and crew felt about the late actor.
Since Monteith’s death from an overdose, the Glee cast and crew have been attempting to deal with the loss of their friend and coworker from the show. Earlier this month the cast uploaded a Cory Monteith memorial card on YouTube and work has started on the next season of the show which will air one week later in September because of Cory’s death.
The show’s producers have already started working on the third episode of Glee where they will address the death of Monteith’s character Finn Hudson and also the death of the young actor. According to co-creator Ryan Murphy and the Fox Chairman of Entertainment, Kevin Reilly, the issue of drug misuse and drug addiction will be addressed. Public Service Announcements featuring members of the Glee cast will also run throughout that episode.
Lea Michele and her tearful dedication of her Teen Choice Award to Cory Monteith was a truly touching gesture that couldn’t have left a dry eye in the audience. Fans of Cory and Lea, will continue to support this brave and tragic young lady as she tries to move on from his unnecessary death.
