The newest threats against US citizens abroad are being called the most specific threat since 911.
In light of these new threats the US State Department has issued a worldwide travel alert. Some of the areas of possible attacks of terrorism include south Asia North Africa and the Middle East. “Current information suggests that al-Qaeda and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August” according to the State Department.
Over the past 10 days the National Security Agency has intercepted terrorist communications. While the unnamed sources would not give specifics; they described the content as “disturbing.”
Although the intelligence community is unsure of exactly where the threats may be carried out, they do agree the possibility of attacks are real.
US Representative Peter King of New York called the threat “the most specific I’ve seen” since the 911 attacks in 2001. “It is coming out of Yemen, and it is al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. There is a plot, the attacks are planned, but it’s not certain as to where.”
Senator Saxby Chambliss of the Senate Intelligence Committee said “There is an awful lot of chatter out there. Very reminiscent of what we saw pre-9/11.”
The terrorists groups are upset over unmanned drone strikes, adding to their reasons to attack Americans. Indications are that some groups are considering kidnapping techniques to counter against the drone attacks. Almost 50 drone strikes have occurred since the start of 2012, 3 in the last 5 days.
US government officials are not the only ones concerned. Interpol has issued its own warning, taking seriously the possibility that this is the most specific threat since 911. On Saturday the agency stated “With suspected al Qaeda involvement in several of the breakouts which led to the escape of hundreds of terrorists and other criminals, the Interpol alert requests the organization’s 190 member countries’ assistance in order to determine whether any of these recent events are coordinated or linked.”
These threats are coming just before Eid al-Fitr. Also called Breaking the Fast this celebrates the end of Ramadan. This is also coming on the eve of September 11. The September 11 2001 attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon were the largest terrorist attacks on US soil. In 2012 September 11, US Ambassador Christopher Stephens and three other Americans were killed in an attack in Benghazi.
US officials are undecided as to how long the Embassies will be closed. Some may open Monday while others will remain closed.
Calling this newest threat the most specific threat since 911 is just another indication that the terrorists are not going to quit and fade away into the sunset. Unlike a conventional war the “war on terror” is fought differently. The battle lines are not clearly drawn and the terrorist know which buttons to push to keep Americans jumping at shadows (threats escalate close to 911.) Unfortunately there is no clear resolution to stopping these attacks.
