Derek Medina, 31, was arraigned on a charge of first-degree murder on Friday. Medina is charged with murdering his wife, Jennifer Alonso, in their South Miami home on Thursday. Medina turned himself into to the South Miami Police Department on Thursday morning, but not before posting the following message on Facebook, “I’m going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife love you guys, miss you guys takecare Facebook people you will see me in the news.” Medina also posted a picture of Alonso’s body, slumped on the their kitchen floor in a black leotard with the caption,” RIP Jennifer Alonso.”
Facebook officials wouldn’t comment on the incident, except in a statement that was emailed to the press, “The content was reported to us,” a Facebook spokesperson stated. “We took action on the profile — removing the content and disabling the profile, and we reached out to law enforcement. We take action on all content that violates our terms, which are clearly laid out on our site.”
The post said that Alonso was punching Medina and that he couldn’t take it anymore so he got his gun and shot her. The post was up for five hours before Facebook removed it.
One of Medina’s neighbors recalled him as, “He was just different.” Yoshi Dade, 33, also told the Associate Press, “He would walk around here and kinda patrol the area. He was always telling me there was a lot of stuff going on around here.”
Another neighbor told the AP that he knew Medina in passing, but never suspected he would kill his wife. “I met him a couple of times,” said Phil Eby. “He seemed like a pretty nice guy.”
Medina’s father, Derek Sr., told a local news station that his son admitted to the murder after he came over Thursday morning. Derek Sr. then drove his son to the police station. “He came to my house, and all he said was, ‘I need to go to the police. I need to turn myself in,’” Derek Sr. said that Medina and Alonso remarried last year after a brief divorce that followed a 2-year marriage.
Derek Medina Jr. is an actor who had a brief cameo on USA’s Burn Notice. He is also a self published author whose bibliography contains such titles as Attention World Save Yourself and How I Saved Someone’s Life and Marriage and Family Problems Thru Communication.
Police say that Alonso’s ten year old daughter was in the home at the time of her mother’s murder, but that she was found unharmed.
