As if we didn’t already know that Taylor Swift isn’t exactly Harry Styles’ biggest fan, the singing sensation decided she would make her thoughts both publicly and abundantly clear. During the Video Music Awards, Swift was briefly (but quite clearly) seen muttering “shut the f**k up” to Harry and his motley crew, One Direction, who were presenting an award on stage. Yes, another awards ceremony, another F-bomb.
As Swift’s ex-boyfriend presented the award for Best Pop Video, she was caught leaning over to one of her long-time celebrity friends, Selena Gomez, to castigate the lead singer of British boy band, One Direction. The boys took it in turns to deliver a series of short, generic speeches; however, it wasn’t until Harry Styles took center stage that Swift seemed unable to contain her raw emotions.
Styles and Swift experienced a blossoming relationship that went as far as an asthmatic tortoise that was flipped upside-down, and abruptly ended in January of this year. Unpleasant words were then bandied around, as Harry Styles described their fleeting affair as a “pain in the arse,” whilst Swift mocked Styles’ accent during a Grammy performance.
According to the Daily Mail, the lovers separated after Harry was snapped kissing Emma Ostily, an American model, whilst in New Zealand.
The tension showed no signs of abating, as Taylor Swift pranced up towards the VMA awards stage, with a look of purpose in her eyes. During her acceptance speech for the Best Female Video award, which was handed over by Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams, Swift seized the opportunity to berate Harry Styles, once more, but in a more mild-mannered, F-bombless kind of way.
The young singer graciously thanked her die-hard fans and described how she “really wanted” the prestigious award. However, things then turned slightly sour as she went for her ex-boyfriend’s jugular:
“I also want to thank the person who inspired this song, because he knows exactly who he is, because now I’ve got one of these.”
The cameraman clearly knew where to look next, and directed the viewing audience to an unsettled Styles, hesitantly clapping. All the while, his band mates (Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson) were witnessed smirking at poor, young Harry’s expense.
It must be said, however, that Taylor Swift is usually somewhat more reserved, and is not often seen or heard issuing profanities.
However, maybe all is not lost. In quite an incredible turn of events, both Harry and Swift were seen posing for a photo with mutual friend, Ed Sheeran, during a VMA after-party event. Admittedly, Sheeran was planted in the middle, likely in an attempt to diffuse tensions between the pair; still, it’s progress.
So, there we have it. Although Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke seem to have stolen most of the attention from the glamorous spectacle, with their obscure, tongue-waggling performance, there were still other highlights from the VMA awards ceremony, primarily in the form of the Swift-Styles sniping contest. These days, it almost seems as though the F-bomb is a mandatory part of any awards ceremony.
