The little cute blue men are back with live action and animation in the movie ‘The Smurfs 2.’ As the catch-line says, “Get ready to get naughty” you will get naughty, chirpy, and frivolous with the Smurfs but you won’t touch the zeal and zest that the previous movie had. So, ‘The Smurfs 2,’ the sequel to The Smurfs, gives you a lot of naughtiness, a pinch of action, great animation and a few tiny blue men. But these queue of tiny blue men are not brave enough to rekindle the spark, the swish and the surprises. The’ Smurfs 2′ lacks the wit, wiz and the spark of the previous film.
The stepparents, the villains of so many fairy tales and other children’s stories, get some redemption in The Smurfs 2, a new, not very engaging movie featuring a lot of blue skin and household names & voices. The Smurfs 2 will whisk you back in your childhood days when you loved watching The Smurfs as cartoon but side by side you will realize something is missing. But If there is a little child inside you, always craving for adventure, it’s your movie. Just watch the movie to have some meaningless pleasure and don’t try to relate the things. It’s as superfluous as nonsense writing, as sweet as honey and as adorable as a naughty boy. It simply gives you a reason of getting naughty in childish way.
The Smurfs movies gave this blue planet an opportunity to play again with the dolls of heart. If The Gulliver’s Travels, The Thumbellina can regenerate your mind, then why not smurfs?
Like the initial Smurfs movie, this one is a mix of live action and animation, something that displeased a segment of the Smurf fan base the first time and will certainly do so again. The first one was set in New York. Here the action switches to Paris as the nefarious Gargamel( Hank Azaria, again putting more effort into his role than anybody else) sets out to increase his supply of smurf essence. Yes, smurf essence. Gargamel, the evil wizard and sworn enemy of smurfs saves your day. Director Raja Gosnell was more careful about the blue bigrade than the story. So, Smurfs 2 started losing the spark from beginning.
Among the queue of smurfs, Jokey is the best. He always runs up with a box and says, “Here, open a present” and then it would explode and everyone would laugh. But all the smurfs are jolly enough to lighten your day. The little figurines tried hard enough to hold interest, but this kite is bound to leave its teather.
Here, Smurfette ( Voice of Katy Perry) is having nightmares about betraying her fellow Smurfs and turning them over to Gargamel to be captured. Meanwhile, the Smurfs are preparing a surprise party for Smurfette’s birthday, but as Smurfette tries to find out what her fellow Smurfs are planning, none of them are saying a word. She takes this to mean that she is now unwelcome in the village as a Smurf.
In Paris, Gargamel is now a star attraction, amazing people with his sorcery, but he sees that he is running low on the Smurf essence that gives him his magic powers. With his new creations, the Naughties Vexy and Hackus, Gargamel plans on opening a portal to the Smurf village by using the Eiffel tower as a conduit so that he can kidnap Smurfette and, through her, get Papa Smurf’s secret formula for creating Smurfs. However, as the portal he created isn’t big enough for him to go through, Gargamel takes Vexy and sends her through the portal to grab Smurfette and bring her to Paris.
Human couple Neil Patrick Harris & Jamya Mays again Smurf-friendly human couple with a son Blue, help the rescue along , though neither seems very happy about being in a Smurf sequel. Now, they don’t love the smurfs like their own children.
Brendan Gleeson, as Patrick’s stepson wants to prove himself; he wants to show that stepdads are not always bad if you treat them properly. In fact, they are often far better than your biological dads.
The Smurfs 2 is hard for young children to follow. But one thing for sure, they can enjoy the movie whole-heartedly. You elders may find it bizarre to relate, but let your children have a naughty weekend with smurfs. If The Smurfs 2 doesn’t fulfill expectations, it’s your problem, not for children. So, after Despicable Me 2 and The Croods, The Smurfs 2 will shine on the silver screen for sure, even if the story is pathetic like most Holly movies. Let yourself be a little naughtier, smoother, smurfier!!
