Apparently, Angelina Jolie is being awarded an honorary Oscar for all of her humanitarian work. She’ll be joining the company of many entertainers, past and present, who have striven to contribute to the entertainment industry in some meaningful way that doesn’t have a specific Acadamy category already defined. While many know of Angelina Jolie and her humanitarian efforts, few will realize exactly how tirelessly dedicated she has been and how an honorary Oscar is the least that she deserves.
Her early career was spent establishing herself as a brilliant actress who exuded passion, mystique and eccentricity. Shes always been a tabloid staple and has gracefully endured the endless stream of gossip and judgement that the media would attach to her throughout her entire career. She then turned the platform created by her acting career into a medium used to generate attention for the causes she held dear.
It started while she was filming Tomb Raider in Cambodia and it is there that she was compelled to begin her work with refugees. Working with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees she began efforts to bring awareness and aid to refugees in many parts of the world who had been displaced by turmoil and disaster. She persists in her efforts and has to date visited over 20 different countries to further this cause.
While tabloids fill their pages with their desperate certainty of the demise of her relationship with Brad Pitt, the two of them donate millions of dollars to charities aimed at ending extreme poverty, or throw charity dinners to raise money for Katrina survivors who were still displaced two years after the hurricane occurred. They’ve also donated money to help people recover from a tornado in Missouri — Brad Pitt’s home turf — and to those in need of earthquake relief in Haiti.
These are only the tip of the iceberg in a myriad of reasons why Angelina Jolie totally deserves to be given an honorary Oscar.
Jolie has lent support to more than two dozen charities or foundations. She has donated money to Doctors Without Borders, to bring medical aid to remote, poverty stricken areas of the world. She published a book and started a jewelry line to raise money for other organizations. She has even sold exclusive photo rights to secure hundreds of thousand of dollars in charitable donations.
She gives speeches to help humanize the people she encounters regularly that struggle to survive in hopes of garnering further assistance for their benefit. She uses her fame and status as a public figure to spread messages about things that matter to her, such as appeals for donations or the more recent decision to go public with her double mastectomy.
Jolie also recently gave money to aid in the recovery of Malala, the 15-year-old girl who was shot in the head by the Taliban for speaking out publicly that girls should attend school. She has set up other schools for girls in conflict riddled parts of the world. She has also pledged to help end sexual assaults as part of warfare.
The Academy states that the purpose of this award is to “honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy.” Based on this criteria, it is clear that Angelina Jolie deserves to receive an honorary Oscar.
