On Wednesday night, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon featured Black Simon & Garfunkel singing Katy Perry’s number one hit song, “Roar.”
It was amazing! Though the two people who portray “Black Simon & Garfunkel” are, it could be called, a “gag” act, they do an incredible job of getting the look, mannerisms, and style of singing down that Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel made famous with a long series of hit songs, such as “The Boxer,” “Mrs. Robinson,” “Sound of Silence,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” and “Scarborough Fair.”
Black Simon and Garfunkel are, in reality, two members of Jimmy Fallon’s house band for his show, The Roots. They are Quest Love and “Captain” Kirk Douglas.
Previously, they’ve done covers of other songs, like One Direction’s “You Don’t Know You’re Beautiful,” “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk and “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore.
Jimmy Fallon always first talks about an incredible act he’s seen at a coffee shop or elsewhere, called Black Simon & Garfunkel, then he says something like “They just happen to be here, and they will sing a song from their boxed set of albums.”
Yes, the act is a novelty act, but the two are eerily similar to the original Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, staring straight ahead as they sing, harmonizing really beautifully. One of the only differences may be that Art Garfunkel’s Afro was higher and wider than that of Kirk Douglas. I think that if Simon & Garfunkel ever saw these guys perform, they would be honored and proud.
When they get to the part of the Katy Perry song where they roar, they seem to really get into it — the videos below are something you must check out, if you’ve never seen them before, or it’s been awhile since the last time you saw them.
“You Don’t Know You’re Beautiful,” “Get Lucky,” and “Thrift Shop” are gems, as well, and — guess what — they’re all below, with Katy Perry’s “Roar,” for you to enjoy listening to!
They’re each great versions. Other than “”Roar,” I’d say that my favorite might be “Thrift Shop,” though it’s difficult to chose.
They’ve been told before and it’s been said on other websites that Black Simon & Garfunkel should have their own album, singing their versions of modern songs. I wholeheartedly agree — it would be both pretty humorous, and also very cool, and I bet the album would make the duo a LOT of money.
