On September 5th CBS Sports began a new season of “Inside College Football” and the first thing viewers saw was the intro video with Playo, T. Turner and O-Dogg. The intro, recorded at the notorious Rose Bowl Stadium located in Pasadena, California, was packed with acrobatic catches, hard-hitting tackles and the musical fragrance of Gary, Indiana’s own Number 1 Playaz. Throughout the entire video these guys are shown in full force and they spit fresh rap lyrics while dancing to the sounds of their own music.
This isn’t CBS Sports’ first rendezvous with the rap group. The trio recorded a song for the star of Indiana University’s basketball team, Cody Zeller, and the song became a hit and instantly went viral throughout the University campus. It wasn’t long before CBS Sports caught wind of it and made it their priority to find these guys.
The producers began trying to contact the trio and once the connection was made they expressed interest in using the Number 1 Playaz’s song for an episode of “Inside College Basketball.” Of course, the group happily consented. They were ecstatic with the opportunity to get their name and music in front of a bigger audience; and the rest is history.
Their success didn’t happen overnight. This was a result of hard work and a lot of sacrifice. These guys have been working and preparing for more than 15 years in the background before earning the right to the spotlight. They have opened for several artists such as Future, Soulja Boy and Yo Gotti; to name a few. They have even created their own record label entitled, “Playaz On Top Of The Game” or simply P.O.T.O.T.G. Records LLC.
Gary, Indiana has not been recognized for much outside of Michael Jackson, but that’s all changed since the rap group Number 1 Playaz hit the scene. This city has birthed its share of musicians but definitely isn’t known as a breeding ground for rappers; somehow this male trio defied the odds and made a name for themselves.
Gary has one of the highest crime rates in America and is deteriorating quickly. In the midst of the crime, poverty, drugs and peer pressure these three young men found a way to become greater than their surroundings and rise above the ashes.
When Playo, the spokesman for the group, was questioned about his feeling for their new found success he replied, “We are extremely blessed with the best fans in the world. We have received continuous love since the video aired from sports enthusiasts and music fans from around the globe.” He added, “The Number 1 Playaz are upward bound and won’t stop until they reach the top!”
The trio realized they had a passion for writing music during their middle childhood years. Playo remembers watching his older cousins record themselves when he was as young as 8-years-old. His curiosity sparked great interest and caused him to be intrigued with the idea of doing it himself one day.
The artist he most admires is Shawn “Jay Z” Carter but a variety of artists have inspired them to pursue a career in rap; such talents as Too short, Master P, Tupac, LL Cool J, Scarface and E-40.
When asked about Playo’s favorite album he was instantly stumped because he has witnessed so many great albums, but after serious consideration he settled on “The Eminem Show.”
The Number 1 Playaz pride themselves on making music about real life situations. They don’t support the ideals of popping mollys, selling drugs or disrespecting women so they don’t write or rap about it.
Their dream was to perform with the late great Michael Jackson of their hometown. Since that’s no longer possible they would love to work with other great artists such as Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake, Mary J Blige, Eminem, Jay Z, Big Sean, J Cole and Kendrick Lamar.
They have just released a new mixtape featuring fellow Indiana rap star, Freddie Gibbs. You can download it for free right here: Put Us in the Game 2.
