Chicago: Off-Duty Police Involved Shooting

Preliminary Statement on Off-Duty Police Involved Shooting – 1900 Block of North Lincoln Ave.

On Saturday, August 31, 2013, at approximately 11:40 pm, an off-duty police officer observed a burglary-in-progress on the second floor in the rear of an apartment building in the 1900 block of North Lincoln Ave. The officer announced his office and ordered the offender to come
down the stairs. As the offender approached, the officer observed the offender to have his hand in his waistband. The officer ordered the offender to display his hands and the offender refused to comply. Again, the officer ordered the offender to display his hands, and again, the
offender refused to comply. The offender then threatened the officer’s life and produced a shiny object from his waistband as he ran towards the officer. As a result of this action, the officer discharged his weapon fatally wounding the offender. There were no reported injuries
to the officer.

This matter remains under investigation and all further inquiries can be directed to the Independent Police Review Authority at 312-446-3298.
