Derek Hough and Julianne: Sibling Rivalry?

Derek Hough and His Sister Julianne

Derek Hough, the fair-haired hottie of Dancing With the Stars, took home the first televised Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography at the awards show Sunday night. In the audience, his younger sister Julianne looked on with pride. Since her own rise to fame, which began as a 19-year old on DWTS, the media spotlight has shown brightly on her career and her relationship with American Idol host, Ryan Seacrest. Now, brother Derek is getting some big attention of his own. But, as viewers watched Derek Hough and Julianne on the red carpet, there was no evidence of sibling rivalry between the two.

Since Julianne’s 2009 departure from DWTS to expand her career into music and acting, the pair continues to remain close supporters of  one another. About him, she says, “Derek is the most talented person. I think the sky’s the limit for him.”  Of her, when asked how he thinks she will do as a guest judge on DWTS, he said, “She’s got a really good mind and a phenomenal eye.” They are frequently seen together at awards parties, such as this year’s Warner-Bros. and InStyle Golden Globe Awards after party. As for sibling rivalry, Derek and Julianna appear more like BFF’s, always supporting each other in front of the press and behind the scenes. Julianne is often seen coming by the DWTS studio to visit her brother.

Last year, Derek won the DWTS mirror ball for the fourth time, breaking the tie of three wins each with his sister.  This year as he tries once again, this time with Glee star, Amber Riley, Derek will be faced with his sister as his judge. Julianne is scheduled to fill in as guest-judge for Len Goodman in one episode of the show. Derek jokingly hints he’s afraid his sister may remember him pulling her hair when they were younger and give him low marks because if it. In an interview, he said, “She’s going to be like, ‘Hey, remember that time when you pulled my hair when we were kids? Four!’” He followed it up by saying he thought she would be a fair and impartial judge.

The dancing brother and sister grew up with three other siblings and dancing was always a part of their lives. Both sets of their grandparents were dancers and their parents were on the same ballroom dance team in college. Derek and Julianne, both studied and lived in London at an early age under the tutelage of dance coaches Corky and Shirley Ballas. Along with the Ballas’ son Mark, (another cast member of DWTS) they trained in song, theater and several forms of dance. Derek and Julianne began performing together, along with Mark , when they formed their own pop trio 2B1G (“2 Boys, 1 Girl) and also performed at dance competitions throughout the UK.

The Houghs join other celebrity brother/sister combos, including Patricia and David Arquette, Eric and Julia Roberts, Jason and Justine Batemen, Joan and David Cusak, and Shirley MacClaine and Warren Beatty.  In the case of Derek Hough and sister Julianne, sibling rivalry seems to the farthest thing from their minds.  It looks like two Houghs are better than one.

One Response to Derek Hough and Julianne: Sibling Rivalry?

Derek and Julianne are great apart and together and I am SO happy and proud of Derek for his emmy win. But a small correction in your story Julianne won only two Mirrorballs not three. Derek had the most wins of any of the pros when he had three and now he has put that title out of reach with four. Not to mention his second place finish with Shawn Johnson which in my opinion should have been a win also. You go, Derek.
