Addressing the UN General Assembly on Saturday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy argued that the entire Middle East region ought to pursue the goal of nuclear disarmament. In his comments, he also asserted that Israel – which is estimated to have at least 200 nuclear warheads in its possession – has continually displayed a “deliberate ambiguity” regarding its weapons. He called for the country to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty as well.
Foreign Minister Fahmy’s comments come two days after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani articulated similar thoughts, saying that Israel should join the treaty. He referred to nuclear weapon disarmament as “our highest priority.”
