Fourth Porn Performer Tests Positive for HIV

The Free Speech Coalition, a porn industry trade group declared on Friday a moratorium on film production as the third actor in less than a month tested positive for the HIV virus. Then today, a fourth performer was reported to also have been infected

There already was a moratorium declared last month when porn actress Cameron Bay came forward as having been infected. Last week, actor Rod Daily revealed on Twitter that he had also been diagnosed as positive for HIV. Bay and Daily had been dating for several months. Daily worked mostly in gay films. No specific details about the third performer have been released by the Free Speech Coalition, except that he or she has not worked since before the moratorium imposed on August 21 because of Bay’s positive test.

The Free Speech Coalition could not comment on the fourth performer that has been infected, as they had not been notified of that particular case. This particular instance of infection was not reported to them; but instead was revealed by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. This might lead one to question the legitimacy of the information, as the AIDS Healthcare Foundation has locked horns before with elements within the porn industry both in the court of public opinion, and in the judicial system. Similar circumstances applied in the case of Daily, who was not diagnosed by a lab affiliated with the trade group; but by a private physician. Because of this, a moratorium was not issued until the third performer was diagnosed.

It can take as long as three months for someone who has been infected to test positive for HIV, since the test does not detect the virus per se; but antibodies against it.

Besides the outbreak of HIV, the case has gained notoriety because Bay worked with the actor who played Anthony Weiner in “Weiner and Me.” The film is about the Anthony Weiner sexting scandal, and stars Sidney Leathers, one of the women involved in a virtual affair with the New York mayoral candidate.

Leathers reportedly now advocates mandated condom use in the industry, although she engaged in unprotected sex during her scenes in “Weiner and Me.” The porn industry at large has come out against required condom use and several companies and actors within it legally challenged a measure ordering condoms to be used during film shoots. The ruling on that case was that such a law is constitutional; but parts of it that concern enforcement are not. The legal fight is expected to continue. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which lobbied for the county measure is now pushing for the requirements to be extended to all of California. This has caused concern that such legislation might cause the industry, which generates more money than many might think, to leave for other places where regulations are more lax.

As the fourth actor tested positive for HIV in less than a month, one thing seems likely: Regulations for the industry will almost certainly change soon. However, what shape those requirements will take remains to be seen.

One Response to Fourth Porn Performer Tests Positive for HIV

SO SAD! Young ladies and men–do not put your life at risk to make a quick buck. There are other ways to earn a decent living. I hope others will refrain from choosing to play ‘Russian Roulette’ with their life. No judgment here. I feel angry that more people do not talk about this industry and what these performers risk for entertaining others. It is vulgar entertainment to me, however I said no judgment. I hope these performers think about their health choices more carefully and the industry is more closely monitored and restrictions are put in place. use condoms–it is not safe sex–but it is SAFER sex. Also, the industry should donate money to finding a cure. The porn industry is a multi-million dollar business…use some of the profits for AIDS research and to help its victims.
