George Zimmerman, who made headlines when he was acquitted for the killing of 17-year-old, unarmed Trayvon Martin has been detained by police in response to allegations by his wife Shellie of domestic abuse.
Lake Mary, Florida police responded to a 911 call from Shellie Zimmerman around 2:00 p.m. in which she claimed that George had threatened her and her father with a gun at her parents’ home. Shellie has been staying with her parents since Aug. 13, as the relationship with her husband has become strained since the trial for the killing of Trayvon Martin, and Shellie’s own trial for perjury in a matter related to that case.
Deputy Police Chief Colin Morgan has said that so far, the investigation has not resulted in the retrieval of a firearm, and that George Zimmerman has been cooperative; but has declined making any statement until he speaks to an attorney first.
