In Sunday night’s Pageant Confidential: The Road to Miss America on ABC ( 8 p.m. EST), viewers will be given a look behind-the-scenes at beauty pageants and what women go through on the road to participating in the Miss America Pageant.
The video that follows is a preview glimpse of the 20/20 episode Pageant Confidential: The Road to Miss America. It takes a look into the lives of some of the estimated 12,000 women who annually participate in small-town beauty pageants across the United States for the chance to be included among the 53 women who will eventually compete for the title of Miss America.
What does it take to become Miss America?
The hour-long special on ABC will lead directly to the Miss America Pageant, which will take place in Atlantic City, New Jersey, at the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall. The episode will follow the dreams and stories of several contestants who desire to ultimately be crowned Miss America.
ABC’s camera got the opportunity to document in intimate detail highlights of these women’s journeys to achieve their goal, as they enter city, regional, and state beauty competitions and are eventually transformed into polished beauty contestant veterans by the time they are seen by millions of viewers around the country and the world in the Miss America Pageant.
The episode will be hosted by Lara Spencer, who is a Good Morning America anchor and co-host of the Miss America Pageant, as well as being a former judge of the competition.
Also, we will get a glimpse into the life of what it’s like to be a winner of the Miss America Pageant. The episode will interview and follow the present Miss America, Mallory Hagan, as she takes part in some of the activities and events that are expected of anyone who becomes crowned Miss America.
Besides all of this, the show will have a behind-the-scenes look at the current Miss States in Atlantic City, as they contend with butterflies, using “butt glue” to make sure that their bathing suits don’t ride up on them while they’re in front of the judges, and try to both have fun and deal with their anxieties.
The Miss America Pageant will have its top 15 contestants compete live before a celebrity-filled panel of judges.
This year, the judges will be NBA star Amar’e Stoudemire from the New York Knicks, N’Sync’s Lance Bass, Barbara Corcoran from Shark Tank, Mario Cantone from Sex and the City, and world-renowned violinist Joshua Bell.
Cantone has joked around, possibly half-seriously, that he’d like to sing the Miss America theme song made famous by Bert Parks. However, just this past January, the Miss America organization decided to use an instrumental version of the song, rather than the one with lyrics.
Will the winner of the competition be Miss Kansas, Theresa Vail, who has been in the news of late for her array of visible tattoos? She is already making history, as being the first Miss America contestant ever to sport her ink.
One of her tattoos, on her left shoulder, is a U.S. Dental Corps symbol, as she is a sergeant in the U.S. army and a member of the National Guard. The other, larger, tattoo is known as the “serenity prayer.” Though it’s likely that several more contestants have tattoos, they are either located on parts of their bodies where they aren’t visible, or they use makeup to cover them up.
Besides her military background and her tattoos, Vail is an avid hunter, can skin a deer, and enjoys cooking squirrel stew.
