In the US this coming October, Samsung will start selling its Galaxy Note tablet and smartphone. Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch will be sold by some cellular carriers, while their Galaxy Note 3 smartphone will be carried by Verizon Wireless, Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T.
Also, you will be able to buy both the smartwatch and the smartphone at retail outlets such as Radio Shack, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and Amazon.com.
The new products were unveiled on Wednesday. According to AT&T, it will retail the Samsung’s smartphone for $299.99 or, if you use the AT&T Next installment plan, for $35 a month. AT&T will ship orders starting on October 1.
You can get the smartphone through T-Mobile by paying $199 down and then $21 for 24 months. T-Mobile will sell the smartwatch for $299.99, a penny under $300.
Another company that is selling the smartwatch beginning in October is US Cellular. The company hasn’t stated what pirce it will selll the Samsung product for, though.
Consumers who buy the Samsung smartwatch will be able to use its speaker phone function to have conversations or read their texts or emails by glancing at their wrists.
One catch is that, to be able to use all of its functions, the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch needs to be wirelessly linked with a smartphone. Once it is linked, the smartwatch can be used to alert you to incoming calls and messages.
The Samsung smartwatch’s screen, diagonally, is 1.63 inches in length. The smartwatch. like other Samsung tablets and phones, uses Google’s Android operating system.
The smartwatch will be sold in a variety of fashionable colors. You’ll be able to purchase it in mocha grey, oatmeal beige, jet black, gold, rose gold, lime green, wild orange, and mocha gray. You’ll be able to buy the tablet and the smartphone classic white or in jet black.
Various types of “smartwatches” have existed for years now, but they haven’t yet proven to be big sellers among consumers.
However, with giants of the industry like Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. getting involved and promoting their versions of smartwatches, and with Google Glass apparently about to become a hot seller for Google, now might be the time for them to start rising in popularity.
According to Samsung design team member, Pranav Mistry:
With Gear you’re able to make calls and receive calls, without ever taking your phone out of your pocket.”
Another giant of the industry, Sony, started selling their latest SmartWatch this past June, and came out with an update to it on Wednesday. Toq, also introduced on Wednesday, is Qualcomm’s offering in the expanding market of wearable computer devices. Google Glass will be worn like a pair of glasses, and it will have functions that are somewhat similar to a smartphone. Apple’s product will be called an iWatch.
Some limitations to the Gear are that all of its functions can’t be used unless it’s linked up to a Samsung smartphone, and so far, only a limited number of apps will work with it, though 70 are available right now. Examples include apps for Runkeeper, Facebook, and Twitter.
Besides those drawbacks, the Gear will only last approximately a day before it needs to get charged.
Which smartphone and smartwatch is best for you? Will you buy one of Samsung’s Notes, like its Galaxy Note tablet or smartphone; or, will you buy Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch? If you have plans to buy one in October, or have a Sony, Pebble, or other type of smartwatch currently, please let me know how you like them or why you plan to buy a certain brand in the Comments area.
